JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA), in proud partnership with the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), Glencore, and the Bakwena Ba Mogopa Traditional Council, is excited to announce the official launch of Phase Four of the National Youth Service (NYS) Programme. The launch will take place on 08 August at the Berseba Sports Ground in the North West province.
This collaboration marks a significant milestone in CSA’s ongoing commitment to grassroots development and social transformation through sport. With the fourth phase of the NYS Programme now rolling out, CSA aims to deepen its impact across rural and previously disadvantaged communities, providing meaningful employment and skills development opportunities to the youth in the Berseba region.
The NYS Programme is a key initiative of the South African government designed to empower young people through community service, while also addressing socio-economic challenges. Through this programme, 3,800 young South Africans have already benefited via the CSA Hub structure, which houses 70 cricket Hubs across the nation. These hubs serve as epicentres of development, providing access to quality cricket facilities, coaching, and educational support.
Through the partnership with Glencore and the Bakwena Ba Mogopa Traditional Council, CSA will extend its cricket development initiatives to the Berseba Multi-purpose Facility. As part of this phase, 200 youth beneficiaries will receive accredited training in umpiring and scoring, cricket administration, Mini-cricket coaching and leadership development
CSA Chief Executive Officer, Pholetsi Moseki, commented: “CSA is proud to be a vehicle of positive change in South Africa’s communities. The NYS Phase Four launch in Berseba is not just a cricket initiative; it is about empowering the youth and building sustainable futures through sport.
“Our strategic partnerships with NYDA, Glencore, and the Bakwena Ba Mogopa Traditional Council reflect a shared vision to create platforms where young people can thrive and where cricket becomes a tool for unity and upliftment.”
Japie Fullard, CEO of Glencore Ferroalloys, said: “Partnerships like this help ensure that young people in our host communities gain access to opportunities that many are experiencing for the first time, whether it’s skills development, leadership training, or stepping into the world of cricket.
“We proudly support this initiative because it reflects our commitment to building vibrant communities with a strong future. The talent we’ve seen in Berseba is truly inspiring, and I believe every one of these young players has the potential to achieve great things in their sporting careers,” he added.
Bakwena Ba Mogopa Traditional Council, His Royal Majesty Kgosikgolo Motheo Mamogale gave the project his blessing and said: “We are inspired by the commitment from our partners. This project highlights the importance of leadership and collaboration as it seeks to restore hope and unify our children and youth in particular, to ensure they reach higher heights by developing from an amateur to a professional athlete.
“As the community of Bakwena Ba Mogopa, we would like to extend our gratitude to Cricket South Africa and Glencore. We hope this project will serve as a call to action from other mining companies to partner with their doorstep community and invest in sports development across the country.”
