ZONDO DOUBLE TON SETS UP BIG DOLPHINS FIRST INNINGS TOTAL IN HIGH-SCORING DAY OF CSA 4-DAY SERIES

JOHANNESBURG: Khaya Zondo (203* off 299 balls) scored a maiden career double-century as the Hollywoodbets Dolphins recorded a mammoth first innings score against the Six Gun Grill Western Province on Day Two of the first round of the CSA Four-Day Domestic Series in Cape Town on Saturday.

All the Four-Day Domestic Series matches are streamed live on SuperSport’s YouTube channel, with the first round taking place between 29 October-01 November.

After resuming the day’s play on 186/4, overnight batters Zondo and Jason Smith began the day in fine fettle, going onto add 211 runs for the fifth wicket with both men bringing up their respective hundreds before Zondo continued with the lower order to reach the incredible milestone as the Dolphins declared on an impressive 489/8.

Kyle Simmonds finished the innings with figures of four for 146 for Western Province before his teammates started their reply with the bat. That reply began with a setback as the Dolphins removed both of the home side’s openers early on before a partnership between David Bedingham (62) and Zubayr Hamza (24) carried WP to 101/4 at stumps after both batters fell late on.

In Bloemfontein, where there was no play on Day One following rain, ITEC Knights skipper Pite van Biljon lit up the Mangaung Oval with his 19th First-Class hundred, scoring 137 off 192 deliveries to guide the hosts to 320 all out, with Hardus Viljoen (4/62) the standout bowler for the GbetsRocks.

Meanwhile, at the Imperial Wanderers, there was another big total posted, this time by the Imperial Lions in their clash against familiar foes, North West Dragons. Ryan Rickelton top-scored for his side with 159 off 230 balls as the home side put up 408 all out, while Malusi Siboto also added an important 51 off 52.

That total gave the Lions a commanding 249-run lead heading into the Dragons’ second innings as the away side ended the day’s action on 50/3 still 199 runs behind with two days to play.

In the game at SuperSport Park, Centurion, the Momentum Multiply Titans fought back well against the Gbets Warriors despite a century from Edward Moore 110 (188), as they reached stumps with a 94-run, second innings lead with in-form batters, Sibonelo Makhanya (64*) and Jordan Hermann (56*) at the crease.

Earlier, the Titans had dismissed the Warriors for 258 with Corbin Bosch (3/46) and Simon Harmer (3/62) leading the charge, before the Titans responded with a fighting 218/4.

The opening round of the 2021/22 CSA Four-Day Domestic Series continues on Sunday, 31 October with the action getting underway between 09h30-10h00.
