WP, DOLPHINS AND FREE STATE MAKE WINNING STARTS TO WOMEN’S PROVINCIAL ONE-DAY CUP

WP, DOLPHINS AND FREE STATE MAKE WINNING STARTS TO WOMEN’S PROVINCIAL ONE-DAY CUP

JOHANNESBURG – A brilliant hundred from Momentum Proteas batter, Andrie Steyn was the standout performance as the Six Gun Grill Western Province sealed an emphatic 194-run win over the Fidelity Titans to begin their CSA Women’s Provincial One-Day Cup campaign in Tshwane on Saturday.

The other Division One match of the weekend saw the Hollywoodbets Dolphins clinch a surprising 13-run victory over home side and defending champions North West Dragons at the Witrand Oval in Potchefstroom.

In the only second division encounter, Free State made the most of their home ground advantage to overpower Boland by 170-runs at the Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein.

At the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Oval, Western Province were asked to bat first and posted a commanding 295 / 6 with opener, Steyn leading from the front with a measured 103 off 124 balls, including 12 fours. There was also a key contribution from the experienced Saarah Smith with a half-century worth 65 off 82 deliveries (7 fours) in a 141-run partnership with Steyn.

Ghandi Jafta was the pick of the bowlers for the Titans, with figures of four for 68 in her 10 overs.

In reply, the Titans made a steady start to their chase with a 50-run opening stand between Suné Louw (30) and Robyn Searle (47*) before WP captain, Leah Jones wreaked havoc with the ball. The right-arm seamer bagged four wickets for 23 runs, well-supported by Delmi Tucker (2 / 30) and SA U19 Women rising star, Kayla Reyneke (2 / 9) as the hosts were bowled out for 101 with 18.5 overs to spare, with Province claiming a statement victory.

In Potchefstroom, top-order batter, Nicole de Klerk starred with the bat as she fell five runs short of a deserved century on 95 off 119 balls (10 fours, 1 six) to help propel the Dolphins Ladies to 172 / 9 despite the notable display from the Dragons bowling attack led by Anneke Bosch (2 / 8) and Nthabiseng Nini (2 / 28).

With the bat, the 2021 / 22 One-Day Cup winners struggled to maintain their initial momentum created by their top six batters featuring Izel Cilliers (45), Bosch (41) and Masabata Klaas (33) as a regular fall of middle-to-low order wickets helped the Dolphins wrap up a superb result.

Kiara Fisher (2 / 21) and SA U19 spinner, Seshnie Naidu (2 / 25) were the leading protagonists for the KZN outfit with ball in hand.

The highest-scoring match of the day took place at the CUT Oval, where Free State captain Yolandi Potgieter (94 off 109 balls; 10 fours, 1 six) and promising all-rounder, Miane Smit (91 off 79 balls; 13 fours, 1 six) fell agonizingly close to opening day hundreds as the hosts posted 322 / 6 against Boland.

The away side failed to find the required rhythm in their innings as medium pacers Zintle Kula (3 / 18) and Sindiswa Kheni (3 / 18) played a key role in restricting the Boland batters before they were eventually dismissed for 152 after 34.2 overs to give Free State the win.

The domestic action continues on Sunday, 25 September with the commencement of the CSA Women’s Provincial T20 Cup featuring the same matchups. The encounters will be live from 10h00 SAST and will be streamed live on Pitch Vision.
