Proteas opening batsman and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock has won the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Mumbai Indians.
The 26-year-old scored 29 off 17 balls to help the Mumbai side set a total of 149/8 from their 20 overs in the final against the Chennai Super Kings played in Hyderabad on Sunday evening.
Fellow South African international Imran Tahir had bowling figures of 2/23 from three overs for the Super Kings.
In reply, the Chennai side saw Proteas captain Faf du Plessis score 26 off 13 balls in a 33-run opening stand with Shane Watson.
The Australian opener went on to score 80 from 59 balls but was dismissed in the final over of the Super Kings’ chase, which saw them end just one run short of Mumbai’s total.
Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga claimed the wicket of Shardul Thakur off the final ball to secure a fourth IPL title for the Mumbai Indians.
All three Proteas players will return to South Africa and begin preparations for South Africa’s 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup campaign, which begins with a match against host nation England in London on May 30.
