04 Jan SA U19S’ PRE-WORLD CUP SERIES ENDS LEVEL AS WEST INDIES WINS FINAL YOUTH ODI
VINCENT:South Africa under-19s experienced a 19-run defeat in their fourth and final Youth One-Day International (ODI) clash against their West Indies peers to end the series 2-2 in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on Monday.
Despite a Dewald Brevis-inspired bowling performance of four for 11 to help dismiss the West Indies youngsters for 126, the SA U19s were restricted to 107 as the visitors wrapped up their pre-ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup tour.
After losing the toss and being asked to bowl first, South Africa made an ideal start to the contest, picking up three early wickets to leave the hosts 16 / 3.
The West Indies innings was then stabilised by a crucial 58-run partnership for the fourth wicket, featuring a notable knock from Teddy Bishop (43) while Rivaldo Clarke contributed a measured 30 off 46 deliveries.
After the pair were finally removed, the SA U19s bowlers applied the pressure on the home side, taking wickets at regular intervals before Brevis’ leg-spin claimed the final four wickets to fall.
Aphiwe Mnyanda (2 / 19) and Matthew Boast (2 / 41) were the other standout bowlers for South Africa.
With the bat, the SA U19s struggled to find the required solidity and rhythm to mount a sustainable chase as they lost wickets regularly.
The trio of Johann Layne (3 / 34), McKenny Clarke (3 /23) and Jaden Carmichael (3 / 14) starred with the ball to limit the away side’s scoring rate before eventually bowling them out within 24 overs to seal a series-levelling victory before all focus turns to the World Cup.
The SA U19s will next be in action in official 2022 ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup Warm-Up matches against Australia on Sunday, 09 January, and the West Indies again on Wednesday, 12 January before kicking off the tournament on Saturday, 15 January against India.
