SA Emerging go down by 54 runs in tour opener

SYLHET: Jenay Winster returned impressive figures but it was not enough as the South African emerging women began their tour to Bangladesh with a tough 54-run defeat to the hosts in the opening One-Day International in Sylhet on Sunday.

The young bowler claimed figures of three for 33 as Bangladesh emerging were restricted to 195 for nine in their 50 overs, with the visitors then replying with 141 all out in 44.5 overs at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.

The South Africans, coached by Dinesha Devnarain, now trail 1-0 in the five-match series and will be hoping to bounce back in match two on Tuesday.

In their tour opener, they won the toss and bowled first, but struggled to get through the home side’s top-order.

Murshida Khatun (36) and Sharmin Sultana (34) gave the Bangladeshis a strong start, before Fargana Haque then anchored the rest of the innings with an unbeaten 71 off 102 balls (5 fours).

The South Africans did manage to chip away after the opening Khatun-Sultana salvo that yielded 78, although Haque stood firm to lift her side to a competitive total.

There was also a wicket each by Jade de Figuerido (1/33), Leah Jones (1/23), Micheala Andrews (1/22) and Faye Tunnicliffe (1/18).

The SA Emerging side made a solid start in reply, with top-scorer Andrie Steyn (41) and Robyn Searle (15) putting on 41 for the opening wicket.
