04 Feb Rain has the final say in washed out Betway SA20 Friday
Friday, 03 February: A torrential Highveld storm brought a disruptive end to the clash between the Joburg Super Kings and Paarl Royals at the Wanderers, while continued downpours at Kingsmead led to the abandonment of Durban’s Super Giants clash with Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
Fifteen overs were delivered at the Wanderers with the Royals well-placed at 131/4.
English opening pair Jason Roy and Jos Buttler had set the platform with a rapid 53-run stand in just 3.3 overs.
Buttler departed for 23 off 11 balls, but Roy continued his new-found form with 61 off 42 balls.
Donavon Ferreira changed the game though with two tight overs that conceded just five runs and the wicket of Wihan Lubbe. There were also wickets for Romario Shepherd (1/30), Gerald Coetzee (1/24) and Nandre Burger (1/26).
However, the big-hitting David Miller and Evan Jones were still at the crease for the Royals poised for a late onslaught, but the weather ended any chance of the game progressing any further.
Meanwhile, at Kingsmead in Durban, there was only time for 5.2 overs to be delivered. They were highly eventful with Adam Rossington clubbing 35 not out off just 18 balls.
There was, however, also an opportunity for England left-arm seamer Reece Topley to take two wickets with successive balls, including that of Proteas white-ball captain Temba Bavuma for a first-ball duck on his BetwaySA20 debut for the Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
Despite the hard work by the Kingsmead ground staff, which included Super Giants assistant coach and Proteas legend Jonty Rhodes, to get the covers off in time, there was unfortunately no further play.
All four teams were awarded two points each with the Sunrisers Eastern Cape (2nd) and Paarl Royals (3rd) remaining deadlocked on 19 points.
Joburg Super Kings is one point adrift with 18 points in fourth position, while DSG have moved off the bottom of the table into fifth place on 14 points.
