A clinical performance by the bowlers saw the Momentum Proteas women beat Sri Lanka by five wickets and win their four-match One-Day International (ODI) series, two-one after the second match was rained out.
South Africa won the toss and elected to field, restricting the hosts to 137 all out 43.4 overs. Shabnim Ismail, Marizanne Kapp, Yolani Fouri and Matshipi Marcia Letsoalo took 2/15, 2/17, 2/19 and 2/30 respectively to secure the meagre total after Eshani Lokusuriyage (46) was the only one to score more than captain, Chamari Atapattu’s 26 off 71 balls.
In their reply, the Proteas’ wicket keeper and vice-captain, Trisha Chetty, along with Dané van Niekerk (29*) scored 59 off 81 balls, including four fours to lead their side to victory after several stops and starts that saw Lizell Lee (18), captain Mignon du Preez (12) and Kapp (11) depart cheaply. The pair shared a 37-run partnership for the fifth wicket.
Coach, Hilton Moreeng is delighted with the victory and is happy with the direction that the side is moving in.
“We’ve played really good cricket in Sri Lanka, with the exception of the last game that we lost,” he said.
“The team have shown great intent and bouncebackability and have put themselves on the line to achieve their objectives and that makes me a proud coach. To win an ODI series in the subcontinent in conditions that we are not used to is a huge feat and one that we are proud of and will celebrate. Now we look forward to the T20 series and we hope to end this tour on an even higher note.”
The teams will meet in three T20 matches starting Thursday, 23 October at Colts Cricket Club in Colombo.
1st T20i – Thursday, 23 October 2014
2nd T20i – Saturday, 25 October 2014
3rd T20i – Sunday, 26 October 2014.
