16 Oct Lions Victorious In Boland Park
JOHANNESBURG: DP World Lions secured their first win in the 2023/24 Cricket South Africa (CSA) 1 Day Cup in Boland Park on Saturday.
Lions took on the Gbets Rocks in Paarl as the hosts won the toss and opted to bat first. Openers, Janneman Malan and Clyde Fortuin were off to a good start, putting up an 89-run stand for the first wicket.
Fortuin fell to Bjorn Fortuin in the 16th over to bring Keegan Petersen to the crease. Malan (70) and Petersen (50) brought up their half centuries in the 51-run partnership as Rocks ended the innings on 240/8.
Evan Jones dismissed Malan whilst Nqaba Peter (2/) saw off Petersen and Pieter Malan with just three runs.
- Fortuin was the pick of the bowers for the visitors, returning 3/27 in 10 overs including the wickets of Michael Copeland (17) and Shaun von Berg.
An all-round batting effort from effort from the Lions set up the chase, with half centuries from Joshua Richards (54) and Mitchell van Buuren (52) anchoring the innings.
Also in the double digits were Ryan Rickelton (36), Zubayr Hamza (35), Wiaan Mulder (29*) and Dominic Hendricks (22) as Lions successfully chased the target, winning by five wickets.
Richards fell to Siyabonga Mahima, Hendricks to Aviwe Mgijima and van Buuren was caught by Mgijima off Achille Cloete. Meanwhile, von Berg returned two scalps, claiming the wickets of Rickelton and Hamza.
In Division 2, Eastern Storm won by 23 runs against Limpopo Impalas in Polokwane.
