JOHANNESBURG: Lions, Titans and KwaZulu-Natal Coastal enjoyed excellent runs at the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Girls Under-16 Week in East London this past week with all three going unbeaten throughout the competition.

Lions had Sinako Mahlombe to thank for a lot of their success as she claimed 10 wickets in the four games she played. The energetic youngster returned figures of four for nine in their opening win against a tough Western Province, who they edged by two wickets, and claimed two wickets apiece in victories over Border (2/7), North West (2/10) and Northern Cape (2/5).

The girls from the Highveld won their other three matches by 164 runs, seven wickets and 75 runs respectively.

Their neighbours from the north enjoyed success against Free State by seven wickets on day one, followed by wins over Boland by 10 wickets, Kei by 32 runs and an eight-wicket triumph over Western Province.

Key performers for the Titans were Lesedi Madisha after she took nine wickets, while Janicke Janse van Rensburg hit top scores of 36, 23 in 35 on three occasions to set her side on the path to victory.

The other outstanding team of the week was KZN-Coastal after they ousted Eastern Province (five wickets), Limpopo (60 runs), Northern Cape (seven wickets) and North West (four wickets).

Andiswa Ndlovu was their shining light, and indeed one of the star girls with the ball all week, after she claimed a total of 13 wickets, including a best return of five for 16 in the big win over Limpopo.

Although her team did not win all their games, North West all-rounder Diedre van Rensburg was another girl to shine after posting the only century of the week when she struck 105* in a day two win over Easterns. She took three for 34 in the same game.

A day earlier, Van Rensburg made 68* and claimed three for 12 in an 84-run win over Border, although her team lost on the remaining two days.

At the CSA Boys U16 Week that took place in Johannesburg, play was possible only on day one (11 December), with matches on the remaining days all washed out on account of the weather.

There were two especially impressive wins – Eastern Province stunning Lions and Easterns ousting Western Province.

Locals, Lions went down by six wickets after they were bowled out for 137 in a 50-over game with Sipho Potsane bagging three for 39. In reply, Jordan Strydom hit an unbeaten 51 as EP won with nearly 20 overs to spare.

In the other major upset, Easterns amassed 263 for nine thanks in the main to Declan le Roux (58).

Despite a match-high 71 from Benjamin Hansen, three wickets each by Daniel Bosman (3/20), Cayden Ramage (3/29) and Aldre Huyzers (3/29) ensured Western Province were bowled out for 207 to go down by 56 runs.

There were also wins for Titans, KZN-Coastal, Northern Cape, Limpopo, Garden Route Badgers, and Boland.
