23 Jan Landsman And Meso’s Partnership Leads South Africa To Triumph
JOHANNESBURG: South Africa U19 Women claimed their first Super Six victory with a five-wicket win over Bangladesh on Saturday.
Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first as they hit the ball to the end setting a target of 106 runs for SA U19.
Kayla Reyneke led the bowling attack producing an incisive effort bowling out four of the Tigress batters finishing her spell on 4/19. Miane Smit (1/19) and Jemma Botha (1/27) both contributed to restricting the opposition to score under 120 runs.
A good fielding from the hosts gave them control of the game, Elandri Janse Van Rensburg catching Bangladesh’s Misty Shaha in the 5th over was sensational.
Proteas opener, Janse Van Rensburg, was the first to depart after a mishap between her and Simone Lourens leading to Janse Van Rensburg’s run out. Looking for a breakthrough, the SA U19 were set on to convert the deliveries they faced into runs and build a competitive partnership.
Lourens rocked back and made no contact while trying to play a drive, and the ball careened into the stumps dismissing her on 26 off 21 balls.
Losing four wickets halfway through the match put South Africa under pressure to increase the run rate in the next 10 overs. A solid 70-run partnership between Madison Landsman (37 off 38)and Karabo Meso (32 off 30) laid down an exceptional chase for the team. The partnership earned Landsman player of the match status.
South Africa won by 5 wickets and currently placed in third place in the standings below India and Australia with tied points. The next fixture against Sri Lanka will be crucial for the Proteas as they will look to increase their net run rate to qualify for the semi-finals.
