27 Mar KNIGHTS AND ROCKS UPSET THEIR HOSTS IN THE LATEST ROUND OF THE CSA ONE – DAY CUP
JOHANNESBURG: The Gbets Rocks and ITEC Knights secured impressive victories away against the North West Dragons and Six Gun Grill Western Province respectively, to move up the CSA One-Day Cup standings.
The Rocks were put to the bat first by the Dragons in Potchefstroom, setting the target to 252 runs.
Eldred Hawken and Duan Jansen did well with the new ball to keep the run-rate at a minimum. The pair was rewarded with the early wickets of Janneman Malan and Ruan Terblanche and Rocks slipped to 27/2 in the powerplay.
- Malan was caught by Shaylen Pillay off Hawken’s bowling with seven runs and Terblanche caught by Lesego Senokwane from Jansen’s delivery with two runs.
Pieter Malan and Stiaan van Zyl held the innings together with a 173-run stand for the third wicket. Malan (98) was run-out by a brilliant throw from Senokwane at deep, just two runs short of a century. Van Zyl went on to finish the innings with an unbeaten 114* runs including nine boundaries.
The Dragons found their breakthrough after ending that partnership with a six-wicket haul from Hawken.
Hawken (6/46) claimed the consecutive wickets of Clyde Fortuin (12), Hardus Viljoen (1), Michael Copeland (1), Ferisco Adams (8), and Zakhele Qwabe (0) and Rocks ended their innings on 251/8.
The Rocks’ defence was set early in the innings when the first ball of the innings from Achille Cloete (3/31 in 10 overs), sent the stumps flying to dismiss opener, Senokwane for a first ball duck. In his last delivery of the opening over, he trapped Pillay lbw and the Dragons slumped to 0/2. Cloete struck again in the fifth over to dismiss Chris Britz with just one run.
A brief partnership of 36 runs between Wesley Marshall and Senuran Muthusamy ended abruptly when the Muthusamy was stumped by keeper, Fortuin, off Mahima’s delivery.
Marshall (78), continued to rebuild with Delano Potgieter, but Adams found Marshall’s stump, and Potgieter was caught by Adams off Copeland a few overs later with 28 runs.
Hardus Viljoen (3/51), dismissed Khanya Cotani (20), and Nono Pongolo (11) as Rocks were on their way to a promising bonus point victory.
A 51-run partnership for the nineth wicket between Jansen and Hawken had the Dragons at the edge of their seats for an unlikely victory. Viljoen ended the promising partnership when he clean-bowled Jansen for 26 runs.
Hawken (32), was caught by J. Malan off Adams in the final over, and Rocks won the game by 27 runs.
In Cape Town, the ITEC Knights opted to bat first against the Six Gun Grill Western Province.
Matthew Kleinveldt (68), Raynard Van Tonder (54), and Patrick Kruger (53*) half centuries steered the Knights to victory at Newlands.
Rilee Rossouw (48), Jacques Snyman (37), and Pite van Biljon (30), also added valuable contributions to see the Knights set a 305-run target.
Mihlali Mpongwana (3/62), claimed the wickets of Kleinveldt, Van Tonder, and Rossouw while Tshepo Moreki had the two wickets of van Biljon and Gerald Coetzee (0).
George Linde dismissed Snyman, and an unbeaten 53* from Kruger and Mangaliso Mosehle (5*) saw the Knights end their innings on 304/6.
The Western Province’s defence saw the early wickets of their openers when Richard Levi, edged to keeper, Mosehle, off Mbulelo Budaza’s delivery with 15 runs. Tony De Zorzi was caught by Kruger off Alfred Mothoa’s bowling with the same amount of runs and the hosts were 53/2 at the end of powerplay.
Yaseen Vallie (50), and George Linde (55) brought up their half centuries and both fell to Mothoa when he caught and bowled both batters.
Daniel Smith (59) brought up another half century but suffered the same fate when he was caught and bowled by Budaza.
Coetzee, and Romano Terblanche also claimed two wickets each as Knights restricted Western Province to 266 all out, winning the game by 38 runs.
Terblanche dismissed Mpongwana (6) and Kyle Simmonds (5), while Coetzee dismissed Beuran Hendricks (20) and Tshepo Moreki (4).
In East London, the match between Eastern Cape Iinyathi and Eastern Storm was abandoned without a ball bowled due to a wet outfield.
