11 Jul FIRST ODI VS IRELAND WASHED OUT
DUBLIN: The first One-Day International (ODI) between the Proteas and Ireland was washed out at Malahide Cricket Club on Sunday. The three-match series hangs in the balance on 0-0 heading into Match Two on Tuesday.
South Africa put the home team into bat first and they posted 195/4 in 40.2 overs after the match was reduced to 43 overs a side due to a massive downpour and then ongoing rain throughout the innings. All of this after a 45-minute delay to the start of the match due to rain in the morning.
Captain Andy Balbirnie (65) and William Porterfield (63) were the big scorers of the Ireland innings with half-centuries to their names after the Proteas’ chosen bowling attack of three seamers and two spinners kept them relatively quiet in the first 20 overs.
Harry Tector chipped in with 25 off 28 after a long rain delay to give impetus to the innings before his dismissal by Kagiso Rabada in the 39 th over. Mark Adair also smashed two sixes for his 16 off eight, upping the lagging run rate to 4.83 before the rain returned and had the final say.
Rabada was the pick of the South African bowlers with 2/43, while Tabraiz Shamsi (1/35) and Andile Phehlukwayo (1/39) returned a scalp each.
The second match will be played at the same venue on Tuesday and will start at 11:45 (SAST). It will be broadcast live on SuperSport.
