07 Nov DE ZORZI CENTURY LEADS WP RESPONSE IN WESTERN CAPE DERBY
JOHANNESBURG: A fourth hundred in First-Class cricket for Tony de Zorzi helped the Six Gun Grill Western Province take a 48-run lead against the GbetsRocks on day two of their second-round CSA Four-Day Domestic Series clash at the Eurolux Boland Park Stadium in Paarl on Saturday.
The contest is one of seven exciting matches taking place from 05 – 08 November across Division One and Two of South Africa’s top-tier longer format competition, with all the games streamed live on SuperSport’s YouTube channel.
Resuming the day on 5 / 0 after dismissing their opponents for 267 towards the end of day one, De Zorzi and Yaseen Vallie (26) put on 43 runs for the opening partnership before the former teamed up with captain Zubayr Hamza for a huge 70-run stand to take control of proceedings in the Boland.
De Zorzi notched up 129 off 283 balls (13 fours, 1 six), while Hamza fell four runs short of a deserved century on 94 off 160 balls (10 fours, 5 sixes) as the visiting side took the lead in the game before reaching stumps on 315 / 4 after 107 overs.
In Gqeberha, the Imperial Lions are in the driving seat against the Gbets Warriors after another commendable bowling performance from the Johannesburg-based team in challenging conditions for batters. After being bowled out for 170 in response to the Warriors’ first innings score of 96 all out, the Lions attack, namely Sisanda Magala (4 – 17) and Duanne Olivier (2 – 15) tore through the home side to leave them reeling on 41 / 7 at the end of the day’s action, still trailing by 33 runs with only three second-inning wickets remaining.
The Warriors have the performance of Marco Jansen – who bagged six wickets for 38 runs to bowl out the Lions – as a highlight on a topsy-turvy day out in the middle.
Meanwhile in Potchefstroom, the ITEC Knights failed to add to their overnight score of 418/8 as the North West Dragons picked up two early morning wickets that left an unfortunate Patrick Kruger unbeaten on 192 at the other end – eight runs short of a maiden double-century.
The Dragons’ first innings with the bat ended on 237 all out after 68.2 overs, with skipper Nicky van den Bergh (42) the standout batter for his side, while Mbulelo Budaza showed his skill with the red ball to pick up four wickets for 64 runs to force the home side to begin day three following on and 181 runs behind.
In the other clash in Division One, the Momentum Multiply Titans added 53 runs, aided by a late and unbeaten cameo from Corbin Bosch’s (53*), to end their first innings attempt on 424 all out.
In reply, the Hollywoodbets Dolphins batters dominated their opponents at the crease, with Sarel Erwee reaching 103* off 221 balls and Bryce Parsons (78) adding a maiden First-Class half-century in a bright 164-run opening stand to take the away side to 241 / 2 and 183 runs behind at stumps.
Day three of the round two fixtures get underway from 10h00 on Sunday, with the latest scores available here.
