10 Mar Coetzee Takes Three To Help Proteas Hold The Edge
JOHANNESBURG: Gerald Coetzee claimed three wickets to help the Proteas take the advantage after day two of the second Betway Test against West Indies at DP World Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Thursday.
The young paceman took three for 41 in 14 overs, his best return in the three innings has bowled so far at the highest level, to dismiss the tourists for 251 in reply to the hosts’ first-innings 320.
South Africa then faced three overs late in the day to reach the close on four for none – an overall lead of 73.
It was a difficult day for the home side in many ways after they started on the back foot by losing their last three wickets for nine runs at the start, sinking from 311 for seven overnight. Heinrich Klaasen was first to go when he fell third ball of the day, edging Kyle Mayers (3/32) behind without adding to his day one total of 17. Alzarri Joseph (3/60) then mopped up the tail in his next two overs by accounting for Keshav Maharaj and Coetzee, both for one, to end the Proteas’ innings.
The West Indies reply began in the worst possible fashion after they lost four wickets with only 51 on the board. Captain Temba Bavuma set the tone with some fine fielding at mid-off where he picked up quickly and threw down the stumps of Tagenarine Chanderpaul in the fourth over for one.
Coetzee also struck, with Kagiso Rabada (2/19) getting the better of West Indian skipper Kraigg Brathwaite (17) to leave the away side in deep trouble. But Roston Chase (28) and Mayers (29) consolidated with a 52-run fifth-wicket stand before another double strike left their team 116 for six.
Former captain Jason Holder, however, managed the tail expertly with key stands alongside Joshua da Silva (26) and another fine one worth 58 with Gudakesh Motie (17) for the final wicket to leave the deficit at 69 at the changeover. Simon Harmer ended proceedings to finish with two for 63.
Aiden Markram (1*) and Dean Elgar (3*) took the home side to the close with all 10 wickets intact.
