Brits Blasts Badgers To Victory In Women’s One-Day Cup, Rain Condemns North West To Relegation

JOHANNESBURG – Momentum Proteas star, Tazmin Brits smashed her way to a second century of the season to help the Six Gun Grill Garden Route Badgers to their fourth win of the CSA Women’s Provincial One-Day Cup, while a rain-affected day confirms relegation for the North West Dragons during the penultimate round of action on Saturday.

Brits dispatched an incredible 15 boundaries, including seven sixes, to help record a match-winning 127 off 109 deliveries as the Badgers posted 258 / 9 before surging to a 45-run triumph over the Fidelity Titans in Oudtshoorn.

Meanwhile, persistent rain in some parts of the country led to three abandoned matches including the Division One top-of-the-table clash between the Six Gun Grill Western Province and the Hollywoodbets Dolphins as well as the Division Two match-up between Eastern Storm and the Northern Cape Heat.

The third and most defining rained out game of the weekend and the season occurred at the Orban Oval (UJ) in Johannesburg as the wet conditions led to the sharing of points between the DP World Lions and the Dragons without a ball being bowled. That result leaves the Dragons in last place in the first division, eight points adrift of fifth-placed Lions with one match to play.

In the only ‘Top Six’ encounter uninterrupted by rain on Saturday, the Badgers lost out on the toss and were asked to bat first by the Titans at the Six Gun Grill Recreation Ground as the home side’s Proteas-capped players in Brits and Annerie Dercksen (59) combined for a 109-run, second-wicket stand to get the hosts off to a strong start.

Both batters reached their deserved half-centuries before Monalisa Legodi (1 / 36) made the all-important breakthrough to dismiss Dercksen for a 63-ball 59 (5 fours, 2 sixes).

Despite losing her top-order partner and national teammate, Brits showed her class as she continued the onslaught with the willow in another hundred-run stand with Asakhe Nyovane (27) to help propel the Badgers to a commendable first innings total.

Nicolene Janse van Rensburg was the prize bowler for the Titans, taking impressive figures of five for 44 in her 10 overs.

In their reply, the visiting Titans made a steady start at the crease, reaching 107 / 3 at the halfway stage with captain Robyn Searle leading the charge with a composed fifty before she was eventually trapped LBW to leave the Titans 131 / 5 in the 32nd over.

With the scoreboard pressure mounting, the away side continued to lose wickets at regular intervals despite valiant efforts from Janse van Rensburg (35) and Ricea Coetzer (24) before the Titans finally fell short of the target, restricted to 213 / 9, as the newly-promoted Badgers sealed their safety from relegation.

In Division Two’s sole One-Day Cup match on Saturday, experienced campaigner Yolandi Potgieter amassed a 67-ball 55 (6 fours) to help Free State record 202 / 9 in their 50 overs against Iinyathi at the Buffalo Park Stadium in East London, with the home side’s Cinga Mhlubulwana (3 / 38) the standout bowler.

In their response, the Iinyathi outfit battled their way through an eventful innings with Khuselwa Soka (34) top-scoring for the hosts as they fell agonizingly close to their first victory of the competition, losing by four runs after being kept to 198 / 8 in their allotted overs.

The Women’s Provincial action continues on Sunday, 26 March as the focus shifts to the T20 Cup which will serve up the same round of fixtures across Division One and Two.

All matches will get underway at 10h00 (SAST), with every delivery streamed live on YouTube via @ProteasWomenCSA on social media.
