BAVUMA AND HENDRICKS SET UP PROTEAS T20I SERIES SWEEP

BELFAST: Proteas captain, Temba Bavuma, notched up his maiden T20 international half-century and, along with Reeza Hendricks, laid the Proteas a solid foundation on which to build their three-nil series white-wash against Ireland in Stormont on Saturday. The visitors won the match by 49 runs to conclude a successful nine weeks away from home.

South Africa posted 189/2 in their allotted overs after Bavuma won the toss and elected to bat first. He top-scored with a career-best 72 runs from 51 deliveries (6x4s, 2x6s) while Hendricks contributed 69 off 48 (7x4s, 1×6).

David Miller came in at No. 3 after the loss of Hendricks to Simi Singh (1/27) and smashed a 17-ball 36 that included four boundaries and a maximum. Bavuma departed at the end of the 18 th over, making way for Heinrich Klaasen who chipped in with a more sedate seven off five.

Ireland were restricted to 140/9. Wiaan Mulder (2/10), George Linde (2/21) and Lizaad Williams (2/30) were the pick of the bowlers, taking six wickets between them. Andile Phehlukwayo (1/15) added a wicket and a run out to his day’s work to help seal a convincing win for the tourists.

Bavuma was named the Player of the Match, while Miller was named Player of the Series.
