15 Jul Bangladesh Win Match Four To Set Up Decider
RAJSHAHI: Lhuan-dre Pretorius struck 43 and Liam Alder claimed three wickets but it was not enough as South Africa Under-19s (SA U19s) fell to a narrow four-wicket defeat to Bangladesh U19s in match four of their five-game one-day series in Rajshahi on Friday.
Opening batter Pretorius was the standout batter for the tourist with his 50-ball innings at the top of the order, although wickets tumbled rapidly around him. The South Africans were eventually dismissed for 128 in 35.2 overs with Rafiuzzaman Rafi bagging five for 18.
Slow left-armer Alder then grabbed three for 45 to help reduce the home side to 78 for six at the Shahid Kamruzzaman Stadium, before Ashrafur Boronno and Mahfuzur Rabby held their nerve with unbeaten 25s apiece to lead their side to an important win, one that levelled the contest at 2-2.
It means that that the series will now be decided when the final game is played at the same venue on Monday.
The visitors will no doubt be disappointed with their overall showing, but will take encouragement from their fightback with ball.
After losing the toss and being put in to bat, they were in trouble from the get go, slumping to 30 for three.
The biggest partnership of 40 between Pretorius and Richard Seletswane (18) then followed, but that was as good as it got for the away side, who were eventually bowled out with nearly 15 overs to go.
Pretorius’s score was more than double of the next best batter, who was Seletswane. Oliver Whitehead got 12 and Alder hit 15, with none of the others making any significant contribution.
There was hope when the South Africans took six wickets with 50 still to get. Three of those belonged to Adler with Kwena Maphaka (1/37), Esa Gangat (1/22) and Romashan Pillay (1/14) claiming the other three.
But wicketkeeper Boronno and captain Rabby carried their side home with 21 overs to spare.
