18 Sep CSA SELECT SA EMERGING TEAM TO FACE NEW ZEALAND IN 50-OVER WARM-UP IN BENONI
JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) has confirmed a mixed blend of youth and nationally capped players to form a 13-player SA Emerging Women squad to go up against New Zealand in a once-off, 50-over warm-up clash to be held at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Thursday, 21 September.
Under the tutelage of SA U19 Women and National Academy head coach Dinesha Devnarain, the Emerging side comprises of three internationally experienced players in Andrie Steyn as well as Mieke de Ridder and Nondumiso Shangase, who were part of the recent Proteas Women’s tour of Pakistan.
Shangase will captain the South African outfit against the touring squad from Aotearoa, with the One-Day clash set to get underway at 10h00 SAST.
Joining the accomplished trio will be the Western Province pair of Leah Jones and Caitlin Wyngaard, along with the Hollywoodbets Dolphins’ Nicole de Klerk and Jané Winster of the Six Gun Grill Garden Route Badgers.
The remaining spots in the squad will be filled by six future stars from South Africa’s first-ever ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup squad that represented their nation in a home tournament in January 2023. Youngsters Refilwe Moncho, Mainé Smit and CSA Women’s U19 Player of the Year, Karabo Meso together with Seshnie Naidu, Ayanda Hlubi and Jenna Evans.

Commenting on the significance of the warm-up encounter and the make-up of the squad selected, Devnarain said:
“It’s a very exciting time. It is always good for the Emerging team to get together to play fixtures and what better way to do it than against an international team. We are thrilled about it and we are expecting a lot of learnings to come out of it. It’s a also great opportunity to test our depth in the country.
“This match is of utmost importance. There is a Proteas Women team and we want to make that pipeline stronger, and the only way we are going to do that is to expose these girls to a high-performance environment as well as play these international teams.
“We want them, not just to compete, but to go into these games to express themselves as cricketers and understand where their skills are internationally and what gaps we are looking to close in their own games. To make sure, that one day when they do make the Proteas team, they have an idea about how to go about their game.
Devnarain will be supported by support staff that includes Claire Terblanche (Assistant Coach), Marcia Letsoalo (Team Manager), Stacey Hercules (Strength and Conditioning Coach), Adele van Eck (Video Analyst) and Kristy Devine (Physiotherapist).
