12 Mar BOWLERS BLOW AWAY WEST INDIES TO SEAL 2-0 SERIES WIN
JOHANNESBURG: Gerald Coetzee and Simon Harmer claimed three wickets apiece to help the Proteas complete a comprehensive 284-run win over the West Indies on the fourth day of the second Betway Test at the DP World Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday.
The result sealed a 2-0 series win for South Africa after they won the opening match by 87 runs in Centurion.
Victory was set up by paceman Coetzee (3/37) and spinner Harmer (3/45), together with double strikes from Keshav Maharaj (2/4) and Kagiso Rabada (2/19) – the quartet helping the hosts blow away the tourists for 106 in 35.1 overs.
It was a clinical performance on what turned out to be the final day of the series, which began with the home side batting in a strong position on 287 for seven in the second innings and looking to build on their lead.
Player of the Match Temba Bavuma was the rock for the Proteas, but he managed to add just one to his overnight 171, falling for 172 (280 balls, 20 fours) when he hooked Jason Holder (3/48) to Kemar Roach at deep square leg.
Maharaj (10) and Rabada (16) did not last too long with the South African innings ending on 321 in 100.4 overs. Kyle Mayers was the pick of the visiting bowlers with three for 46.
In reply, West Indies suffered a dramatic early collapse when six wickets fell for 13 runs. They had started solidly in pursuit of 391 by reaching 21 for none in the 11th over, before Rabada claimed two wickets in three balls, first trapping skipper Kraigg Brathwaite (18) leg before wicket and then having Raymon Reifer caught behind for duck.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul (2), Roston Chase (0), Jermaine Blackwood (4) and Mayers (7) all fell during the mayhem leaving the away side on 34 for six by the 19th over.
Joshua da Silva (34) and Holder (19) added some respectability to the scoreline by putting on 48 for the seventh wicket, before Coetzee cut through both and Harmer ended the game with the final wicket of Josephs (18).
