23 Oct LUUS TAKES DOWN THE LIONS WHILE WP CULL BADGERS IN ONE-DAY CUP DERBIES
JOHANNESBURG – Suné Luus’ all-round qualities shone through as the Fidelity Titans dominated the DP World Lions, while Six Gun Grill Western Province maintained their perfect start by overcoming the Six Gun Grill Garden Route Badgers in the CSA Women’s Provincial One-Day Cup on Saturday.
Luus notched up an unbeaten century in her first innings of the campaign before following that up with four wickets with ball in hand as the Titans sealed an assertive 222-run victory in the Juskei derby against the Lions in Hammanskraal.
Western Province delivered a well-rounded team effort with key contributions from the side’s experienced core as they edged their Western Cape rivals, the Garden Route Badgers, by four wickets in Cape Town.
In Division Two, Boland made the most of their familiar surroundings at Boland Park in Paarl with a convincing five wicket triumph over Eastern Province, inspired by Michaela Hanekom’s four-fer as well as an unblemished fifty from Chantelle van Schoor.
Meanwhile, due to inclement weather and waterlogged conditions in Durban and Mthatha respectively, the clash between the Hollywoodbets Dolphins and the North West Dragons, as well as the Eastern Cape encounter between Kei and Border, were abandoned without a ball being bowled.
In a weekend anticipated for its derby action, the tussle for bragging rights in Gauteng was the standout contest thanks to Momentum Proteas all-rounder Luus.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat, Luus proceeded to guide the Titans to a daunting total of 285 / 6 with an incredible 137* off 128 deliveries including 13 fours and one six. Her innings also featured a crucial 102-run fourth wicket stand alongside the experienced Sunette Viljoen (Louw) (58 off 49 balls; 8 fours, 1 six) who also brought up her first 50-over half-century of the year.
With the ball, the Titans didn’t give the Lions any breathing room as the opening bowling pair of Eliz-Mari Marx (2 / 17) and Lesedi Madisha (1 / 17) began the wicket-taking parade before the spinners in Luus and Paulinah Mashishi (3 / 19) wrapped things up emphatically to dismiss the visitors for 63 all out in 17.1 overs.
Luus was once again the outstanding player in the innings, grabbing impressive figures of four for 10 to help the home side earn their second One-Day win in 2022 / 23.
At the Six Gun Grill Newlands Stadium, the Western Province bowlers provided adequate and consistent resistance against the Garden Route Badgers, restricting them to 199 / 8 at the crease after the Oudtshoorn-side won the toss and elected to bat first. The trio of Refiloe Bomvana (2 / 24),
Delmi Tucker 2 / 31 and Nosipho Vezi (2 / 38) were the key bowling protagonists for the hosts, setting up a chaseable target.
It was then a solid platform laid by the Proteas pair of Andrie Steyn (40) and Lara Goodall (33) worth 73 runs for the first wicket that set WP on their way to victory. Although Badgers skipper, Haroline Rhodes (3 / 36) revived the away side’s hopes with important middle-order wickets, the Province batters proved too strong as Faye Tunnicliffe (32) and Saarah Smith (28*) contributed to a successful run chase with 5.4 overs to spare.
In the only Pool A match in Division Two, Boland managed to limit Eastern Province’s batting prowess to a score of 178 / 8 in their allotted 50 overs, largely thanks to Hanekom’s return of four for 38 before her teammate van Schoor’s undefeated 67 off 129 balls led the home side to a disciplined five-wicket triumph.
The women’s domestic action continues on Sunday, 23 October with the latest round of the CSA Women’s Provincial T20 Cup.
