Gauteng laid down an early marker on the first day of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Under-17 Week as they registered the only outright win in the competition.

After bowling South Western Districts out for 48 with Chad Classen claiming 4 for 16, Shane Dadswell hit 95 to take Gauteng to a total of 239 for seven declared.

Classen then picked up another three wickets to reduce South Western Districts to 16 for five before the end of the day, which was enough to give Gauteng the outright win.

There were two centuries on the competition’s opening day, with Easterns batsman Vyasan Govenden’s 105 driving his side to 188 for four declared in response to Kwazulu-Natal Inland’s 136 for eight declared.

That was enough for Easterns to win the match on first innings.

The other century was scored by Kwazulu-Natal Coastal’s James Tedder, who stroked an unbeaten 100 in a total of 231 for seven against Eastern Province, who responded with 169 for four to secure a draw.

Griquas and Border also drew, although Griquas came within a wicket of winning on first innings as the match finished with Border 140 for nine in response to a score of 167 all out.

Elsewhere there were victories on first innings for Western Province, Free State and Mpumalanga.

Western Province bowled Zimbabwe out for 102 thanks to Ryan Klein’s five for 17, before an unbeaten 54 from captain Aaqil Ebrahim carried them to 161 for four. Zimbabwe closed on 76 for three in their second innings.

The best figures of the day came from Mpumalanga’s Elnu Potgieter, who took 5 for 8 as Limpopo were bowled out for 122.

Mpumalanga replied with 146 all out, with Ozayr Karodia top-scoring with 50, before Limpopo finished on 35 for no loss.

Free State’s win was set up by the day’s outstanding all-round contribution, with Neil Durrow taking 4 for 18 to bowl Boland out for 118, and then hitting 84 in a score of 188 all out.
