Van Tonder ton seals big win for SA Emerging

Raynard van Tonder’s blistering century led a sterling batting display by the South Africa Emerging team as they registered their first win of the One-Day Triangular Series by thrashing University Sports South Africa (USSA) in Pretoria on Saturday.

The right-hander clobbered an unbeaten 102 off 85 balls, which included eight fours and three sixes, to help his side register 330 for seven.

They then shot out the USSA side for a poor 162 in 32.3 overs – sealing an emphatic win by 168 runs at the Groenkloof Oval.

It was also the perfect reaction for the Emerging side after they suffered a heavy four-wicket loss to the Sri Lanka Emerging team, the third contestant, 24 hours earlier.

Man-of-the-Match Van Tonder was the top-scorer, but the top four all past 50, with the big total set-up by Janneman Malan and Matthew Breetzke’s opening stand of 142.

The former hit 85 (81 balls, 13 fours, 1 six) and the latter amassed 63 (68 balls, 10 fours).

After both fell, Van Tonder carried the innings forward, first with Tony de Zorzi thanks to his blistering 53 off 40 balls (6 fours, 1 six) and then the tail.

Ruan de Swardt was the best of the bowlers with two for 47.

USSA failed to find any rhythm with their reply, slumping to 43 for four and then 135 for seven, before being blown away with nearly 20 overs to go. Isma-eel Gafieldien top-scored with 50 (64 balls, 3 fours, 1 six).

It was a strong combined bowling effort by SA Emerging, with Dayyaan Galiem’s three for 40 leading the way. Kyle Simmonds (2/15) and Thando Ntini (2/41) were also amongst the wickets.
