Jurie Snyman starred with the bat as Easterns made a storming start to the Africa T20 Cup with twin wins on the opening day of Group A action in Pietermaritzburg on Friday.

The left-hander struck scores of 29 and 80 (46 balls, 9 fours, 3 sixes) respectively to help the Benoni-based side overcome Western Province and Hollywoodbets KwaZulu-Natal Coastal and take charge of their group.

Easterns began the day by hammering a strong WP with a 58-run win. After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, they amassed 173 for six thanks to 49s from captain Grant Thomson and Wesley Marshall.

In reply, the opposition were shot out for 115 thanks to a career-best four for 21 by Imran Manack.

Easterns were again on song in their second game – this time thanks to the destructive half-century from Snyman.

The big innings by the opener laid the platform for his side to reach 183 for eight after winning the toss and batting.

Dyllan Matthews then took three for 26 to restrict KZNC to 154 for seven.

The Durban side had earlier beaten Uganda by 20 runs thanks to 73 (44 balls, 11 fours, 1 six) by Marques Ackerman.

In the only other game on the opening day, the Hollywoodbets KwaZulu-Natal Inland thrashed the African side by 133 runs.

The hosts crunched a mammoth 227 for two after they batted first with Cody Chetty blitzing 94 (56 balls, 8 fours, 5 sixes).

Kyle Nipper was also in good form, crunching 77 (45 balls, 7 fours, 3 sixes).
