Thrilling end to RPC U17 Week in Pretoria

The Standard Bank Regional Performance Centre (RPC) National U17 Week came to a close in Pretoria on Friday with six closely contested Twenty20 matches, including a Super-Over win for Border against Northern Cape.

There were also victories for KwaZulu-Natal, Easterns, Northerns, Eastern Province and South Western Districts, who bounced back from defeat on the opening day to win three in a row.

They claimed the big scalp of Gauteng on the final day when they won by seven wickets thanks to a half-century from Clifton Olivier (53).

After batting first, Gauteng posted 100/9, with SWD chasing down the target in just 16.3 overs on the Tuks D Field.

The match of the day was played out at the Tuks C Field where Border’s 89 all out was matched by Northern Cape, who reached 89/9 in their 20 overs. The Eastern Cape side then won via a Super Over.

Kelvin Swarts took three for 17 for NC, which was bettered by Akhanya Bangani (3/9) for Border.

Elsewhere, Prealin Naidu claimed a third Man of the Match performance when he starred with bat and ball as KZN beat Free State by 34 runs at the Tuks Oval.

The all-rounder first made 48 out of a total of 127/5, before claiming two for 20 to help restrict the opposition to 93/9. Andile Zondi was the pick of the bowlers 3/11.

At the Mamelodi Oval, just seven runs separated Northerns from the Boland.

The host union posted 112/7, with the away side restricted to 105/9 despite 56 from Nathan Jacobs, who ended the week as the top run-scorer with 229 runs.

Om Thakkar finished as the leading wicket-taker of the week after adding 3/10 to his name on the final day.

In other action, Joshua Chippendale continued his good form with 68 for Western Province, although they were still beaten by six wickets by Easterns, who comfortably chased down 145/6 with eight deliveries to spare at the Mandela Oval.

Finally, Devandre Moleling struck 47 not out to lead Eastern Province to a 28-run win over Mpumalanga on the Tuks B Field.
