A fifth career century by Sarel Erwee ensured that the Hollywoodbets Dolphins did not roll over in their follow-on innings on day three of their Sunfoil Series encounter against the VKB Knights at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein on Saturday.
The left-hander was unbeaten on 108 (227 balls, 12 fours) at the close after batting all day to take the visitors to an early close on 187/1 – the deficit down to 54.
Erwee received good support from Morne van Wyk, who made a snail-like 58 off 216 balls (3 fours).
The pair had resumed on nine for none at the start and went on to add 166 for the first wicket, before the veteran Van Wyk was run out by the combined efforts of Grant Mokoena and Pite van Biljon.
Vaughn van Jaarsveld (12 not out) then provided Erwee with the support he needed to reach three figures, before bad light brought a premature end to proceedings.
It meant that only 73 overs were bowled on the third day. The Dolphins had been dismissed for 237 on the second day in reply to 478 by the hosts.
