Pieter Malan’s third century of the season ensured the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras enjoyed a slight advantage after the opening day of their Sunfoil Series clash against the Multiply Titans at Sahara Park Willowmoore in Benoni on Thursday.

The visitors were on 272 for five when rain and bad light intervened, ending play over 20 overs short at the start of the round six encounter.

Malan had reached three figures only moments earlier and will resume on 103 not out (224 balls, 11 fours, 1 six) on day two.

He batted for the entire day after his captain Dane Piedt had won the toss and opted to bat first.

The home side struck regular blows, but not quite enough to take command of the first day with Eldred Hawken the pick of their bowlers with his three for 43. Malusi Siboto was also amongst the wickets with two for 57.

Malan’s main support came through Zubayr Hamza (38) – the pair putting on 77 for the second wicket – and Stiaan van Zyl, who made 54 (76 balls, 8 fours).

The latter added 104 for the third wicket with Malan, whose century was the 26th of his career.
