Smriti Mandhana smashed a thrilling 135 runs from 129 deliveries, while Poonam Yadav took a remarkable 4/24 to help India claim an emphatic, 178-run triumph over the Momentum Proteas in the second Women’s One-Day International at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley on Wednesday. The visitors gain an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

It was a tough day at the office for South Africa all-round, seeing both the batting and bowling units struggle to make an impact. The tourists closed their innings with a daunting 302/3 after being put in to bat first. Mandhana’s knock included 14 fours and a six, while unbeaten half-centuries by Harmanpreet Kaur (55) and Veda Krishnamurthy (51) saw them pile on the runs at the latter part of the Indian innings. The fourth-highest contributor to their scorecard came in the form of 21 runs in extras conceded by South Africa, who will look to improve on that before the last encounter.

The hosts’ batting reply was a familiar tale of tumbling wickets, with opener Lizelle Lee (73 off 75 balls), the only one to put on a score of 50 plus. Marizanne Kapp’s 17-not out was the second-highest score, the rest of the batting line-up falling for less than 10.

Disappointment continued for the top order with Trisha Chetty, in her 100th ODI for South Africa, losing her wicket for six runs, while Andrie Steyn and Sune Luus departed for three and two respectively.

While Yadav was the chief destroyer for India in her 7.5-over spell, she was well supported by Rajeshwari Gayakwad (2/14 in 6 overs) and Deepti Sharma (2/34 in 6) who returned two wickets a piece. Stalwart, Jhulan Goswami (1/29 in 7) became the first woman to take 200 ODI wickets when she opened India’s account with the dismissal of Laura Wolvaardt (9) off the last ball of the fifth over.

South Africa were bowled out for 124 runs in 30.5 overs.

The third and last ODI will take place in Potchefstroom this Saturday, 10 February.
