The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (Madibaz) A and Central University of Technology (CUT) maintained their 100 percent records on the third day of action at the 2017 USSA A Week taking place in Pretoria on Wednesday. They will be the teams to beat as the competition enters its semi-final stage tomorrow.

The pair are the only sides to have won all three matches to date, with Madibaz A staying top of Pool A in Section A2 after beating Stellenbosch University (Maties) by five wickets, while CUT thumped University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) by 78 runs to maintain their stronghold of Pool B Section B2.

In Section A1, a century by South Africa under-19 star Jiveshan Pillay (134) helped University of Pretoria edge out North West University (NWU) Pukke by three wickets, while an unbeaten ton from Ryan Rickelton (114*) helped University of Johannesburg (UJ) down University of Cape Town (UCT) by three wickets. University of Pretoria (Tuks) and Pukke are joint-top of the group, with the former ahead by virtue of Wednesday’s win.

The Madibaz A lead Section A2 followed by Maties, whom they just beat, with University of Western Cape (UWC) third after their six-wicket win over bottom-of-the-group, University of Free State (Kovsies) in their latest outing. SA U19s captain, Raynard van Tonder hit 102 in a losing cause.

In Pool B’s Section B1, NWU Vaal are on top following a 73-run win over second-placed University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) on Wednesday. University of Fort Hare are up to third after they beat Madibaz B by four wickets.

And in Section B2, CUT lead the way from Wits, whom they beat on Wednesday, with Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) third after they crushed last-placed Rhodes University by nine wickets.

Summarized report of days one and two

On Monday, there where massive victories for CUT and NWU Vaal in the B Section, while UCT and Madibaz A won big in Section A.

In Section A1, UCT ousted Tuks by eight wickets, while NWU Pukke overcame UJ by six wickets. Section A2 saw Maties beat UWC by 65 runs and Madibaz A crushed University of Free State by 94 runs.

Section B1 had NWU Vaal thump Fort Hare by 180 runs and UKZN ease past the Madibaz B by seven wickets, with wins also for CUT (10 wickets) and Wits University (nine runs) over Rhodes and TUT respectively.

Tuesday saw a big Section A1 win for Tuks over UJ (seven wickets) with Pukke just about getting over the line against UCT (two wickets).

The Madibaz A beat UWC by 36 runs and Maties edged out Kovsies by 34 runs in Section A2.

Finally, Pool B1 delivered victories for UKZN over Fort Hare (63 runs) and Madibaz B against NWU Vaal (6 runs). The match produced the first centurions of the week as Jean du Plessis recorded 109 not out for the Port Elizabeth side and Dwayne Pocock made an unbeaten 100 for NWU.

And in Section B2, Liam Peters hit 102 not out for Wits as they comfortably won against Rhodes (six wickets) and CUT beat TUT by 75 runs.
