With a tightly scheduled domestic and international season expected, the bizhub Highveld Lions camp has been abuzz in the off-season as players and staff prepare for their fight-back and set the course for trophy aspirations.
The Board of Directors is proud to announce the appointment of Justin Sammons as Batting Coach to the franchise. This is part of the Board’s continues strive to enhance players support and give franchise players the best possible opportunity to progress to the national team.
“I am incredibly excited to have an individual on board that is a hometown boy and has contributed to our structures as a player (GCB u/23, Alberton Cricket Club first XI) and a coach (u/15 selector, u/19 assistant coach). Not only does he have thorough knowledge of our pipeline but his international experience and the recommendation of players that he has worked with previously was a determining factor for us,” commented Chief Executive, Greg Fredericks.
Sammons, who has been appointed on an initial two year contract and holds a CSA level 3 Coaching Certificate, has had great experience in coaching internationally through involvement with Zimbabwe Cricket, Hilversum Cricket Club in the Netherlands as well as Helston Cricket Club and Mullion Cricket Club in the United Kingdom.
On a local level, he has been actively coaching at school level for ten years for amongst others Reddam House College and St John’s College whilst also consulting with Hardus Viljoen, Temba Bavuma, Domonique Hendriks, Omphile Ramela, Devon Conway, Mignon Du Preez and Dwaine Pretorius.
Head Coach, Geoffrey Toyana, believes that this will be a great addition to the team. “We want to support our players in the best manner positive and Justin’s addition to the side will enable me to be a bigger all-round support to our players. I look forward to the value that he will add.”
Sammons is looking forward to contributing to the team environment. “I am extremely excited about the opportunity to join the bizhub Highveld Lions. It is a dream come true and therefore I will work as hard as I possibly can for both the team and individual players in helping them achieve their potential.”
Sammons joins the team on 1 August 2017.
