The Cricket South Africa (CSA) three-day Franchise Academy Week begins in Oudtshoorn tomorrow. The under-23 tournament, which involves the Academy sides of the six franchise teams, will run from 22 to 28 January 2017 and aims to provide competition opportunities to CSA’s members (Affiliates and Associates).
The tournament will be held across four venues; Recreation Ground, South Africa National Defense Force, Langenhoven Gimnasium and Bridgeton A in Oudtshoorn.
The programme aims to:
Provide the identified cricketers with the opportunity to challenge for positions within the Senior Provincial (Semi Professional) structure of a Member
Broaden the base of cricketers for Senior Provincial coaches to select from
Further develop the skills of coaches within the different formats played
Forster collaboration within Provincial Academies with the intension of strengthening the Franchise Regional Academy programmes at both Amateur and Professional.
CSA Cricket Services Manager, Edward Khoza said:
“The selected players participating at this week are part of the CSA Members’ Provincial Academy programme which aims to ensure a smooth transition for identified cricketers leaving school and prepare them for the next phase of the CSA Cricket Pipeline namely, the Senior Provincial and Professional levels.
“A Provincial Academy structure is driven by the following outcomes; Holistic development of the identified players at provincial level based on the principle that “Better players make better Proteas,” A structured talent identification and development programme, the retention of these identified players within each CSA Member structure, an Academy system that encourages young players to study and or enter the workplace while playing cricket during the “bottle neck” period.”
