Reabetswe Mokgoro took a remarkable six wickets for 37 runs to set up victory by five wickets for the bizhub Highveld Lions against the South Africa under-17 Invitational XI on Day One of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Franchise Cubs Week in Stellenbosch on Wednesday.
The young Highvled Lions restricted the U17 side to 121 in just under 35 overs after electing to bat first. Opening batsman, Mujaahid Toffar top scored with 49 runs while the rest struggled to surpass Madiwa Chanakira and Christopher Britz’ 12. Louis van Schalkwyk provided good support to Mogoro with his 2/8.
Daniel Moriarty (1/30) and Fraser Jones (3/30) struck in the first two overs of the Lions’ reply, getting rid of openers Joshua Richards and Mohammed Ahmed without scoring. Jacob Miltz returned an unbeaten 45 off 85 deliveries to steer his side from trouble. He spearheaded a 53-run, fifth-wicket stand with Mitchell van Buuren (13) and a 31-run partnership for the sixth with Muhammed Mayet (36). The third highest run score was 19 runs conceded in extras by the U17s.
At Stellenbosch University Oval 3, the Cape Cobras beat Zimbabwe by a comfortable 29 runs in spite of a five-wicket haul by Wesley Madhevere (5/20).
The local side posted 151 in 40.2 overs after they were asked to bat first. Benjamin Henderson (64) and Jesse Christensen (39) shared 85 runs for the fourth wicket after the losses of openers, Ricardo Vasconcelos (9) and Khanya Contani (1) at the hands of Alistair Frost (2/16). Keagan Whitten, Gavin Kaplan, Sinalo Gobeni, Grant Esau and Tiaan du Plessis were dismissed by Madhevere and Liam Roche (2/24) for six, four, two, one and nil respectively.
Number 11 batsman, Kieran Kenny made a useful cameo in the end, hitting 12 runs from 11 deliveries, including two boundaries, to help his side to a more respectable score.
Tiaan du Plessis blew Zimbabwe away with an impressive spell, taking 6/30 in 8.5 overs. Alvin Chiradza and Daniel Zvidzai made the most notable contributions, scoring 26 and 20 respectively before their side was bundled out for 122 to give the Cobras a satisfactory win in the end.
At Van der Stel Cricket Club, Jarred Alder became the first to score a ton in this year’s tournament, setting up a comprehensive, 104-run victory for the Multiply Titans against the Warriors.
Alder hit 114 from 128 balls (12 fours, 1 six), with Joshua van Heerden and Tshepo Mutaung chipping in with a respective 61 and 45 runs to get the Titans to 271/8 at the end of their allotted overs. Siphamandla Krweqe and Akhona Mnyaka took 4/54 and 3/49 respectively.
The Warriors’ batting innings was missing that magical knock to get their side over the line. Jason Niemand (59 off 66) made the most runs after the openers, David Masterson and Matthew Breetzke both fell for 16. Another couple of scores in the teens from David Rusmere (17) and Sinethemba Qeshile (16) were not enough for the Eastern Province side. Beyers Swanepoel (4/36) and Nkosinathi Msiza (3/40) shared seven wickets between them to restrict the Warriors to 167 and claim an emphatic win in the end.
In the last match of the day, the Hollywoodbets Dolphins beat the VKB Knights for four wickets.
Tyron Koen (83*) and Eathan Bosch (73*) shared a match-winning, 107-run partnership for the seventh wicket to help the KZN side successfully reach their 216-run target with 21 balls to spare.
