8:55pm And that is all from our presentation for you today. We hope you enjoyed the wonderful cricket we were treated to today, and hope you'll join us as we call the second game for you in a few days. Good night!

Virat Kohli: Yeah it was quite special. First match of the series is important. We wanted to take the momentum of the Test win into this and when we restricted South Africa to 270 on this sort of a pitch, we were happy. Very happy for Jinx. Jinx is a top class player. We understood fast bowling was going to be a big factor in this tour. He was superb, he took on the fast bowlers. [On India's bowling] Bhuvi and Bumrah, we bank on them. Picking up one or two wickets in the top ten is what we wanted to do. And then the two wristpsinners - outstanding bowling by both of them. They are working wonderfully for the team. They're playing in South Africa for the first time. They were very brave, they were throwing it up and that's why they got wickets. As a captain, its outstanding when you have two guys who know what they want to do.

Virat Kohli is the Man of the Match.

Faf du Plessis: Just a few battle scars. Just went upstairs to get the fingers checked. One-day cricket the intensity is a lot higher. Happy to ge through the game. Feeling strong. Definitely didn't get enough, we didn't bat well enough. I reckon we were about 50-60-70 runs short. Chris had a good partnership but as a batting unit we were disappointed. When you're chasing five runs an over here, it's pretty easy. Tried everything with field placesments and tactics but Virat and Rahane played very well.

Mileend: "Kohli-Rahane partnership gives memories of Sachin-Dravid's many match winning and building partnerships, just think if Rahane gets a longer run in ODI he can be next Dravid, hes adaptive enough to be like him"

Deepak Karkala: "How accurate was Kuldeep in his assessment of the score during the Innings break? "269 is a good score. Hopefully we can chase in 45-46 overs". This is what he said!!"

8:35pm A canter for India in the end. A six-wicket win with nearly five overs to spare. South Africa's 17-game winning streak at home has ended. It wasn't a "complete performance" from India by any means, but enough players contributed at the right moments to seize this game from South Africa, who had the momentum at the start of the match. The miserly wristspin duo took five wickets between them, conceding under four per over when the medium-pacers endured a bad day. Then, Kohli and Rahane in partnership - they put on 189 - were masterful as they dismantled South Africa with strategic running before bringing out the big shots. Nicely finished in the end for India, and they now have a 1-0 lead.

45.3K Rabada to MS Dhoni, BOUNDARY, 4 runs, there's the win. Short ball in at middle stump. Watches it come on and shovels it through square leg with a short-arm action.
45.2K Rabada to MS Dhoni, No run, full toss on off stump. Defended down the pitch.
45.1K Rabada to HH Pandya, 1 run, good length outside off, tapped into the covers off the front foot.

Sravan: "Gloooooriious cover drive! Does it qualify as a drive as it was hit uppish, but it makes a cover drive along the ground look modest. Whaddaplayaa!"

End of over 42. 8 runs this over. 256/2 after 252 balls.
V Kohli 108 (111b 10x4 0x6 ) K Rabada 8-0-40-0
AM Rahane 79 (82b 5x4 2x6 ) more

My colleague Srinath has this whimsical contribution: "A Steven Smith style stat for Kohli in ODIs: he needs 19 successive ducks for his average to drop below 50."

End of over 41. 12 runs this over. 248/2 after 246 balls.
V Kohli 101 (106b 9x4 0x6 ) AL Phehlukwayo 6-0-39-0

V Kohli 91 (102b 7x4 0x6 ) more

AJR: "Mahela Jayawardene is widely considered as a legend in ODIs, but his record it states average figures. He was extremely important for SL middle order who had big hitters above and below him. Rahane is best suited at no. 4, not coz he scored today but coz he can be the glue around which the big hitters can play."

samraat: "@Psychic Rahul can't image because i don't think anybody has game plan in india team chasing if they are 25-2 "

End of over 39. 11 runs this over. 228/2 after 233 balls.
AM Rahane 70 (76b 4x4 2x6 ) CH Morris 7-0-48-0
V Kohli 89 (98b 7x4 0x6 ) more

Psychic Rahul: "All those comments about Rahane being an obvious choice -Too early!! He is good for such below 300 chases only ! Imagine a chase of 340 (which is normal now) and India is 25-2 with Virat out - does Rahane have the game then? No - I really believe Manish Paney and KL Rahul both have the game for small and big chases" ---- That last shot might make you reconsider!

Amarjit Sihag: "Adding to rahane Debate: I think he is suited to pitches which offer range of 260s-280s. Indian pitches in last couple of years have become 330s-350s. Although, 50s do add value but in indian subcontinent a slow 50 can be a reason for team loss... "

Ram: "This Indian team is very similar or even better than the England team. Rahane at number 4 does a similar role to Root. While Indian team may not be as explosive as the England team, they are better equipped to handle or prevent collapses. Plus the death bowling and spinners are better than the English team."

End of over 38. 4 runs this over. 217/2 after 228 balls.
AM Rahane 62 (72b 4x4 1x6 ) Imran Tahir 9-0-47-0
V Kohli 88 (97b 7x4 0x6 ) more

Shouvik G.: "@Phillippe: Rahane's last 4 matches have been played all at home against Australia and he's scored 50s in each of them. I don't think his home performance has been that bad. Flamboyant, no, useful, yes. "

End of over 37. 8 runs this over. 213/2 after 222 balls.
AM Rahane 60 (68b 4x4 1x6 ) CH Morris 6-0-38-0
V Kohli 86 (95b 7x4 0x6 ) more

subash: "9th 50+ score in his last 12 innings and there is 39 among the other 3 scores. Yet he finds himself out on few occasions. Poor Rahane. shouldn't he feature regular in ODI's? "

End of over 36. 14 runs this over. 204/2 after 215 balls.
V Kohli 85 (94b 7x4 0x6 ) AK Markram 2-0-19-0
AM Rahane 52 (62b 3x4 1x6 ) more

Phillippe: "Unfortunately for Rahane, his skills and temperament are terrific for seam and pace rather than at home. India plays a disproportionate number of matches at home and he doesn't get the recognition he deserves. "

End of over 35. 7 runs this over. 190/2 after 210 balls.

V Kohli 73 (84b 6x4 0x6 ) more

Thanks, Al. We've seen this before haven't we? Kohli is leading yet another chase with minimal fuss. The pitch is offering nothing to Tahir and South Africa are fast running out of their strike bowlers. Where will the breakthrough come? They hope from Markram. Here he is. Bowling around the wicket.

And that's drinks. Here's Varun Shetty for the close.

The umpires have decided to change the ball now

Dixith Panyala: "One of the biggest strength of Virat is, after missing a scoring opportunity he never tries to redo the same until and unless provided with such a delivery. He simply manoeuvres the ball around rotates the strike."

Lyrebird: "Had said at the start of this chase that Imran Tahir factor was being hugely overstated by some people. He averages 38 against India, in 9 games has taken 9 wickets, at an economy of 5. The real threat was from the pacers. India have negotiated them well, till now."

Dhawan has been run out only twice in ODIs, both with Kohli on the other end - vs Pakistan in the 2015 World Cup and today.

Anand V: "Absolutely needless stuff from Kohli. One of the many times he has made a fool of himself trying to be too smart. With the lone left hander gone, Tahir will settle down."
