James: "I'm pleased that England are showing some resistance at last, but after their first innings they deserve nothing from this game. The rain delays have certainly increased the excitement though."

Pranay: "Weather aside, this is a good fightback from England. Pretty much everyone, apart from may be a few die hard fans, expected them to roll over."

Broad's getting some treatment on his thumb now. They reckon it was jammed under the bat when he dived in the last over...gets booed for what the crowd think is time-wasting.

6:58pm I see some sun sneaking through the stadium architecture as England walk back out.

Brendan: "Pretty sure England were 7 down at tea in 2012/13 in NZ but held on for a draw. Broad was a slightly better batsman than he is now."

SudarshanaSL: "Don't worry. First innings high scorer yet to come."

Ken: "Losing a wicket last over before close, then last over before Tea, now last over before Dinner has cost us the game (a first innings 58 notwithstanding)." --- That caveat at the end...

Jack: "Another England players seemingly stops paying attention just as a session is coming to a close. Do I smell a pattern?"

Ankur Chaturved: "how has Astle been today? Is Sodhi going to be in with a chance for the next test?" --- Sodhi's just taken 12 wickets for Northern Districts at Wellington. It'll be hard to keep him out. Astle's been all right, but hasn't managed to consistently hit a good length today. Perhaps he's someone who needs a few overs to get into rhythm. Those few overs together aren't on offer for him in this Test...

Richard Suters: "Can we say that 'Stokes chokes and pokes on the stroke of dinner, as he leaves Woakes to face those Kiwi blokes - it's no joke, folks'?" --- I'll allow it.

Aaron Meikle: "Another vote for Wags - this time, because he is as pleasant, friendly and accommodating off the field, as he is aggressive and competitive on it. My kids have met him after 2 tests now and he is their favourite player by far. Goes above and beyond the standard signing, talks to them about what they are up to in cricket - saw him *running* back to the boundary after a spell to chat to kids and sign bats etc. He is the man."

Stephen Kissoon: "Brain fart from Stokes! Even when trying to save a game England can't get their shot selection right. On the stroke of the interval too. Just terrible."

Anthony: "Don't get me wrong, I'm a NZ'er and loving it, but I do feel for Stokes in as much as it was a completely avoidable shot to end a great knock."

Rob: "Wagner has been going great for a couple of seasons - this sort of dismissal is why he is #6 in ICC Bowler test rankings. "

Cam: "I feel Wagner is underrated because he's seen as a short ball bully but his stats are very good and if it was so easy everybody would be doing it. When you really need to buy a wicket, Wags is the man for the job everytime and that kind of talent is priceless. "

Rhys : "Wagner isn't underrated here. We love him!"

6:23pm Whew. I'm obligated to tell you dinner was taken about three minutes ago, as soon as the wicket fell. What a passage of play. "Damn it," tweet the Barmy Army. That should sum up the situation right now. Ben Stokes was on the verge of pulling of one of the great innings, but even on his best day, Wagner has managed to rattle his concentration. The Stokes-Woakes alliance was starting to bring in some panic, even with all the chances being offered. Even Kane Williamson celebrated that wicket with some vigour - that's how flat New Zealand were starting to get. England would've been extremely happy at 300 for 6 at the break. Suddenly, it looks grim for them. And there's going to be a rested New Zealand attack at the other end. Stick around.

England have 300

Ollie: "Never want to wish misfortune on my team or any player, but I'm almost Ali's gone. We need a spinner that actually classes himself as a spinner, a la, Jack Leach. Would also love to see Foakes get a game. Class with the bat and gloves, and he's been on tour for a long time for little reward. 4:18pm The teams are walking back out and the bad news is that one side of the sky is now completely grey...

Kane Williamson: "Oh Black Caps fans, oh ye of little faith. Didn't you realize that my reviews are now as perfect as my cover drive? We've got this. "

Deepak M: "Plus we got to see Williamson beat Ali on the outside edge with the ball, so definitely good performance in all departments"

Kewadoo: "My sixth sense has helped the Blackcaps get a wicket or is that just brilliant bowling from Boult."

Anthony: "Wow. I've been a big critic of Kane's reviews in the past - but that was great and gutsy call!"

Ollie Mannix: "What a game Williamson is having! First a brilliant 100 and now a brilliant review...what a captain!" --- He's not bad at the fielding stuff either!

3:58pm And with that, they'll take tea. New Zealand have picked up three in the first session, they have the new ball in hand, and it'll soon get cooler and darker...England have work to do. Stokes has looked determined to stay out there all day, but it's not looking good at the other end.

John: "Surely this is the ideal time to bring on a spinner. Lots of runs to play with so it doesn't really matter if he's expensive. If he bowls a few overs and doesn't look threatening you can take him off again." --- We might see him in the run up to the new ball I reckon. But this testing of Stokes' patience isn't such a bad ploy right now...

Pressan : "I said it yesterday, I'll say it again. 250 is a winning score against this England side. And as far as batting out a day, be serious. Against good bowlers with a moving ball? In recent years this England side is never going to do that. Look be hopeful, be optimistic but be realistic. "

1.15pm England finally showed some fight yesterday, after three-and-a-half days. Captain Joe Root was front and centre of that effort with another spirited fifty, but England needed a lot more than another half-century, writes Andrew McGlashan.

Gnasher also has this on Henry Nicholls, after his highest first-class score yesterday. Stay entertained.

Also, if you're just logging in on another lovely start to the week, there is this not-so-lovely news on Steven Smith and David Warner.

1.00pm The start of a new week, the end of an old Test. At least that's what it feels like. England were done in for 58, quite a while ago, four days. Four days of so, so much in cricket, particularly in the Cape of South Africa. But here in Auckland, not much has changed since that match-defining period of cricket on the first afternoon.

England, however, have a chance to salvage something, and if they bat really, really well, they could even eke out a draw. New Zealand need seven wickets on the final day, that's all it has come down to.

Mark: "If England score at 3 an over, they'll reach parity with about 16 or 17 overs left. About a dozen more to get a safe lead. In other words, they'll need to bat out maybe 92 or 93 of the days overs: not an easy task." -- Not at all, especially without their best Test batsmen.

9.30 pm Whoa! That was a ripper of a spell from Trent Boult. Unlike the first innings, when he tortured England with swing and seam, here he was causing discomfort with short-pitched bowling, running in from around the wicket and targeting the body. Joe Root was right in the fight, all the way to the last few balls, when he was struck on the hand by one that kicked up awkwardly, which then set up his dismissal, gloved down the leg side. England are 237 runs behind but they do have a long batting order, and it's Ben Stokes in next. This day-night Test is simmering, so do join us bright and early (well, after lunch) tomorrow for its conclusion. It's gonna be epic.

Alfred: "Bowlers everywhere seem to reserve their best for our Joe."

Steve Bowkett: "Exactly what I said. Three down, and now Day 5 is going to be awesome. I don't need my voodoo doll for Kane Williamson after all."

The physio is out in the middle now, tending to the England captain. He's not going to give up this fight - came out to bat in the Ashes looking pale and suffering from illness for large parts of the Sydney Test. He's not stopping unless it's a fracture of something worse. The damage appears to be to the forefinger It's bright red but that's not bad enough to force him off the field. Root to go on

Jack Norman: "This feels too much like our last day night test in Oz, where we ended day 4 with an outside chance of a win, and Root unbeaten on 60 odd..."
