10.20pm So, that just about wraps it up from Hamilton. Andrew McGlashan's match report will be here, and he will have all the follow-ups to come, including an account of Ben Stokes' return to the fray. But for now, from myself, Varun and Alagappan, goodbye and see you next time.

10.15pm Peter: "If I am reading a cricket blog I do not expect to read about a rugby score. Was just about to watch a tape of the Murrayfield match......" Apologies Peter, but I think you'd need to emigrate to Tristan da Cunha to avoid finding out such things in the internet age. Still, now you know the result, you might as well read all about it on ESPN.co.uk!

Kane Williamson "We had to play a lot of cricket before the dew came in, but it certainly was a factor. Keeping them to 70 in the last ten was a great effort, especially when Jos Buttler can hit it to all parts. Mitch Santner is a clean ball-striker."

Eoin Morgan "There wasn't much between the sides, we put a really competitive score on the board, but they fought back really well. It ebbed and flowed quite a while but taking it to the end, we didn't have enough in the tank. The dew played a part, it's a reason [we'd have batted second]. It was a competitive game, and great to be part of."

The Man of the Match is Ross Taylor "I live here, so sleeping in my own bed must have an effect," he says. "I needed to take it deep and give ourselves a chance. It was a little two-faced, even the slower balls kissed off different to a few days ago. Very small boundaries here so we backed ourselves to get 50 off five overs."

10pm Wow, what a contest. New Zealand were all at sea at 27 for 3, were cruising while Taylor and Latham were turning the tables with their fourth-wicket stand, and seemed out of it again when they slumped to 215 for 6 in 42nd over. But Mitchell Santner produced a stunning final riposte to carry his side to a very impressive win. Credit also to the NZ seamers, Boult and Southee, who refused to allow Jos Buttler to cut loose at the death in England's innings.

Sundar S: "The brains trust meeting at the start of the last over reminds me of an interview by Wes Hall talking about the tied test. Apparently The captain ran up to him before the last ball was bowled and said "I have nothing to tell you". To that Hall asked why was he there then. Worrell replied, "The batsman doesn't know I have nothing to tell you"."

Anand Jetti: "The last few overs are exactly the kind of cricket England has to stop playing! They don't seem to believe the game was their's to lose after taking 3 quick wickets. World Cup? Try leaving New Zealand without too many scars!" Well, on the plus side, setbacks like this (and England rugby at Murrayfield) are better now than at the sharp end in 2019...

49.2CR Woakes to MJ Santner, BOUNDARY, 6 runs, that's the way to win it! In the slot, slammed off the toes like a left-handed Carlos Brathwaite, high over deep midwicket to give New Zealand first blood in a thrilling finale!.
49.2CR Woakes to MJ Santner, WIDE, 1 run, slower ball, but it's too far outside off stump!.
49.1CR Woakes to MJ Santner, BOUNDARY, 4 runs, on the toes, and flicked through the legs for a vital boundary! So unlucky for Woakes, he got the blockhole targetted, but the inside edge did enough for New Zealand.

That was an uncalled no-ball incidentally..

Sushruth : "Why didn't Morgan go back to Willey. Surely a better option at this stage. Granted Rashid took the key wicket. But he should've gone back to Willey who has 4 overs left unbowled" Willey is rarely as good at the death as with the new ball.

Anand Jetti: "It makes an interesting discussion but in reality England will play gracious hosts for one of Australia or India to take the World Cup home!" Entirely plausible!

As if on cue, here's Bhaskar: "Thats ridiculous. Yes Amarnath may have done very well and Kapil might not have been at his best bowling wise but he still WAS a world class bowler. Don't top bowlers have off periods too? Doesn't make them NOT world class"

Ruchit: "Even with Wood and Plunkett England's bowling is ordinary.. They don't have a single truly world class bowler in their ODI ranks.. May win bilateral series but tell me when did a team win a world cup without a single world class bowler in its ranks-- Never" A fair point, somewhat belligerently expressed. I guess the difference is the depth and aggression of their batting. They back their bowlers to defend most totals

Cheers, Miller. It was this pair that brought New Zealand a remarkable victory to take a 1-0 lead against India in India. Although Tom Latham is usually twice the batsman he is away from home than he is at home. Time to set that record straight.

That will be drinks. Here is Alagappan Muthu to take up the tale

Harikrishnan AV: "Has any game been called off due to excessive light?" Dicky Bird famously got into a tizz about a reflection off a window during an Old Trafford Test in the 1990s. Now it seems he gets tied down through most of his innings and singles look difficult! " Prophetic words from Simon. It was his eagerness to get a single, any single, that brought about his downfall there

Hot Lips Glover: "In regards to the last ball of England's innings. Just say the chasing team needs 4 off the last ball to win and they hit the ball out to the boundary. Can the bowling team call for a review for any dismissal so that the ball becomes dead and they win the game?" But he has become so crucial to NZ's ability to put up a total that one wonders if he should be asked to reign himself in a little." There is a very subtle difference in mindset between 50-over and 20-over tempos, as England themselves have been demonstrating in recent weeks
