West Indies

That's it we have from the Basin Reserve in Wellington. Thank you for your feedback and time, plenty of other Test cricket today, so stay tuned. Bye.

2.29pm Neil Wagner takes nine wickets in the first game of the home summer, leading his side off the field in what has been a clinical display from New Zealand right through this Wellington Test. Wagner sparked this game to life on the first morning with an incisive display of short-ball bowling.

New Zealand were never going to squander that advantage thereafter, declaring with a first-innings lead of 386. West Indies battled their way through their second innings, showing some fight and resolve on the third day, but they seemed lost today, and eventually crumbled to an innings defeat.

Neil Wagner is the Man of the Match: "A tough graft, the wicket got better as the Test match went on. we bowled well in partnerships. Conditions were tough, a stiff breeze. We had to adapt our plans. Credit to their batsmen, when we got stuck into them again, they took it on, they are a quality team. We had to readjust our plans."

<>Jason Holder: "We didn't help ourselves with the way we batted, very indecisive with the way we batted. We knew what to expect, but just didn't handle it. We got better as the game went on, some soft dismissals which didn't help our cause. Just need to find ways to pick ourselves up."

Kane Williamson: "A superb effort all around, a great Test wicket, pace and bounce for the seamers. Got a lot from that back of a length, not our plan, we tried to swing and seam it. We've seen West Indies through the last few series they have played, they've got better, so we'll expect them to come back."

105.6TA Boult to ML Cummins, OUT, No run, that's the end of the Test. New Zealand win by an innings and 67 runs to take a 1-0 lead. Full and straight from Boult, only a matter of time before Cummins missed one, he missed this. The ball rattles into middle and off stumps..
105.5TA Boult to ML Cummins, BOUNDARY, 4 runs, four more. Full down leg, Cummins backs away but the ball skews off the inside half and races away to the backward square leg boundary.
105.4TA Boult to ML Cummins, No run, shortish delivery outside off, Cummins avoid that again.
105.3TA Boult to ML Cummins, BOUNDARY, 4 runs, nicely hit. Overpitched outside off from Boult, Cummins leans into a drive and finds the gap through cover, for four.
105.2TA Boult to ML Cummins, No run, short delivery outside off, Cummins sways away.
105.1TA Boult to ML Cummins, No run, another short delivery on off, Cummins backs away and swings, but misses it by quite some distance. The wicket not too far away.

1.38pm West Indies need something of substance to make New Zealand bat again. They are still 100 runs behind, and New Zealand's bowlers are well on top again.

1.03pm Lunch. New Zealand have done well with the new ball after Santner trapped Brathwaite to dent their fight. It was up to the opener, Hope and Chase if West Indies wanted to erase the deficit to try and save this game. But all three of them have fallen in the first session and after a few sessions of winning for the visitors, things are back to default here. New Zealand firmly in front and, based on that last Wagner over, not too far from sensing a victory. We'll catch you in a bit.

10.58am New Zealand huddle up beside the boundary. They won't run through West Indies, but will be looking to chip away. Brathwaite and Shai Hope step out under sunny skies. Matt Henry will begin, a rather defensive field, just the wide slip and gully in place.

10.30am Welcome everyone to day four. New Zealand will want this Test to go no further than today, and West Indies will be desperate to take it the distance, giving themselves a chance in the process. The fight they showed on day 3 was exemplary, but such is the magnitude of their task that they are still close to a couple of sessions of batting behind New Zealand. How will they respond? Stick around for the next six hours or so to find out.

Here are the highlights of yesterday, available only in USA though.

Another_PK: "A great day for cricket, yesterday, as WI showed the world how to play this poisonous Bodyline that seems to be spreading from NZ around the world. Let's hope bats around the world notice how to play the one-trick ponies and it dies out as quickly as it sprung up." Somebody woke up on the wrong side.

***

6.26pm A terrific day of batting at the Basin Reserve, two wickets fell all day, continuing the trend of friendly-batting conditions as the Test wears on. Brathwaite has been solid as ever, chipping and nudging, cutting and pulling, finishing 79 off 186. Shimron Hetmyer played a belligerent innings and with some cameos, they have cut West Indies' deficit to 172 runs with eight wickets in hand as we head into day 4.

New Zealand's bowlers were made to work through the day. Neil Wagner was smashed all over, and he along with the rest of the bowling attack, will have to come up with some plans to chip away at West Indies. Will they? We'll be back tomorrow morning to find out. Bye.
