9.10pm They first looked like getting 200. Then it looked like 145. Now, a late burst from Priyanjan has lifted them to 170. Sri Lanka would've taken this at the toss. The reason why they've got an opportunity to redeem themselves? Dilshan Munaweera. Looked completely out of sorts in the two ODIs he played, but today we witnessed some uninhibited hitting. Some clean strokes on the face of fearless bowling. India's wristspinners - Chahal and Kuldeep - gave a good account of themselves despite coming under fire. Axar was excellent too. Challenging but not intimidating, is how you can describe this total. We'll be back shortly with Alagappan Muthu for India's chase.
Ishan Jain: "114 runs have come in boundaries for SL which is over 67%. Definitely, a fighting total. First time on this tour, India would come down to chase a challenging total."
KarthikVanka: "What is India's obsession with short balls these days. I am sure they are delivering 2-3 per over. Pandya and Bhuvi especially"
|19.6||B Kumar to SMA Priyanjan, 1 run, backs away to go over cover, squeezed to the man at the edge of the ring instead..|
|19.5||B Kumar to SMA Priyanjan, BOUNDARY, 6 runs, great shot! Too short, this was sitting up nicely at Bhuvi's pace and he's hammered this pull in front of square. Just clears the ropes. Free flow.|
|19.4||B Kumar to I Udana, 1 run, low full toss outside off, eased to wide long-off.|
|19.3||B Kumar to SMA Priyanjan, 1 run, thick edge as he's cramped for room in his attempt to back away and cut, on the bounce to Kuldeep at third man.|
|19.2||B Kumar to SMA Priyanjan, No run, gets away with this short ball. Banged in short outside off, he was jumping inside the crease to reach the delivery. Should have been called wide. .|
|19.1||B Kumar to SMA Priyanjan, BOUNDARY, 4 runs, what was that? I'm sure even Priyanjan doesn't know what he's done. This length ball was angling into middle, he tried to scoop it fine, then readjusted and then played the back dink over short third man. He wasn't even looking at the ball. How brave of him to try and deflect it the other side..|
|18.6||JJ Bumrah to I Udana, BOUNDARY, 4 runs, top-edges this pull over the keeper's head. Looked to pull over deep square, the ball skidded on to skew away. Handy runs.|
|18.5||JJ Bumrah to I Udana, BOUNDARY, 4 runs, stunning! The attempted yorker gone wrong. This is a half-volley, he makes room, takes it on the full and belts this between mid-off and cover..|
|18.4||JJ Bumrah to I Udana, 2 runs, slapped wide of cover. Rahul comes around at sweeper cover to stop that. Got that on the top part of the bat.|
|18.3||JJ Bumrah to I Udana, No run, looks to back away and flay this over cover but Bumrah shortens his length and tucks him up for room. Beaten.|
|18.2||JJ Bumrah to SMA Priyanjan, 1 run, snakes in a yorker on middle from wide of the crease, squeezed towards midwicket.|
|18.1||JJ Bumrah to SMA Priyanjan, 2 runs, lofted into the gap at deep cover, they scamper back for the second.|
|17.6||B Kumar to I Udana, BOUNDARY, 6 runs, too short outside off ans he's muscled over wide long-on. Picked the length, held his shape against the knuckleball and pulled that away. He's a puny man but packs a punch when he slogs.|
|17.5||B Kumar to I Udana, No run, right into the blockhole on middle, squeezed to cover.|
|17.4||B Kumar to SMA Priyanjan, 1 run, makes room and forces this length ball to the man at the edge of the ring at cover.|
|17.3||B Kumar to SMA Priyanjan, No run, looks to pull but this was over his head or thereabouts. Bhuvneshwar also bowled this way outside off. Beaten.|
|17.2||B Kumar to I Udana, 1 run, prods outside the line of that length ball, inside edge to square leg.|
|17.1||B Kumar to I Udana, No run, chipped on the bounce to mid-off.|
Ankit: "Why isn't Hardik Pandya playing ? I took him in my fantasy team." You really have a fantasy team? For this game? Ah, what dedication. Hats off.
|16.6||Kuldeep Yadav to I Udana, 1 run, works this low full toss on the pads to square leg.|
|16.5||Kuldeep Yadav to SMA Priyanjan, 1 run, pulled to Kohli on the bounce at deep midwicket. Priyanjan was ball watching and so he doesn't run. Bizarre. If Kuldeep had collected the throw at the stumps, this would've been a run-out..|
|16.4||Kuldeep Yadav to S Prasanna, OUT, No run, this is as simple as they come. Kohli, at deep midwicket, had to move no more than a couple of yards. This was a touch short, Sekkuge got no timing or power whatsoever behind that pull. Hit straight down the throat of the Indian captain..|
|16.3||Kuldeep Yadav to S Prasanna, 2 runs, leading edge, lobs over the bowler's head. Long-on and long-off converge to stop that.|
Kohli has quickly asked him to move out of deep square leg. He's coming inside the ring. Jadhav goes back
|16.2||Kuldeep Yadav to S Prasanna, BOUNDARY, 4 runs, touch short, he rocks back and pulls towards deep square where Chahal completely misjudges this.By the time he ran in, the ball was dying on him. This sneaked through to the boundary. Although he made good ground, indecision early on cost him. Bowler and captain are unhappy.|
|16.1||Kuldeep Yadav to SMA Priyanjan, 1 run, takes this on the full and works this down to wide long-on.|
Kuldeep is back
|15.6||JJ Bumrah to SMA Priyanjan, 1 run, rocks back and frees his arms to cut that to deep point.|
|15.6||JJ Bumrah to SMA Priyanjan, WIDE, 1 run, slips this length ball down leg, MS dives low to his left to stop that.|
|15.5||JJ Bumrah to S Prasanna, 1 run, incoming length ball which he looks to whip over midwicket, ends up working it more towards square leg.|
|15.4||JJ Bumrah to SMA Priyanjan, 1 run, dabs this length ball towards the man coming in from point.|
|15.3||JJ Bumrah to S Prasanna, 1 run, hustled for pace. This length ball is tucked wide of midwicket.|
|15.3||JJ Bumrah to S Prasanna, WIDE, 1 run, bouncer but this was way over the batsman's head. Wide and it's a fair call.|
Matthew Walsham: "Different format, same old from SL. Great start that gets undone by poor shot selection and the scoring drying up."
|15.2||JJ Bumrah to SMA Priyanjan, 1 run, disconcerting bounce from length, fends this towards point as they get through. Would've been interesting had Axar scored a direct hit at the bowler's end.|
|15.1||JJ Bumrah to SMA Priyanjan, 2 runs, back of length on middle, defended to cover for a single. Wait, oh. They'll have a second as there's no one to back up the throw at the keeper's end..|
|14.6||AR Patel to S Prasanna, 2 runs, down on one-knee as he plays a half-pull. Yuzvendra Chahal at deep midwicket nearly trips over as he stops, somehow recovers and prevents the ball from trickling over.|
|14.5||AR Patel to SMA Priyanjan, 1 run, chops this to short third man, they get across for the single.|
|14.4||AR Patel to S Prasanna, 1 run, tucked wide of square leg for an easy single.|
|14.3||AR Patel to S Prasanna, No run, big appeal for caught behind but umpire Pallyaguruge doesn't think there was an edge. Looks to drive with the spin, looks like there was a big deflection. No reviews, sadly..|
|14.2||AR Patel to SMA Priyanjan, 1 run, gets outside the line of the stumps and turns this towards short fine.|
|14.1||AR Patel to SMA Priyanjan, No run, slider on the stumps from wide of the crease, squeezed back to the bowler.|
Nags: "is this going to be the first T20 innings dismissals involved with only stumps?" Good question
|13.6||YS Chahal to MD Shanaka, OUT, No run, the wrong'un has done the trick again. Completely foxed. He's been hit for sixes but that hasn't deterred him from tossing it up. Prodded outside the line of the delivery, didn't read it at all. The ball came back in to hit the pad and that would've hit top of leg..|
|13.5||YS Chahal to MD Shanaka, No run, sharp turn again, looks to sweep but is hit on the pad. Outside the line of the stumps, I'd imagine.|
|13.4||YS Chahal to MD Shanaka, No run, sensational delivery from Chahal. Spun back in to bounce over the stumps. The googly sneaked through the gap between bat and pad.|
|13.3||YS Chahal to NLTC Perera, OUT, No run, played on! Chahal has his revenge again. This was a touch short but didn't have the room for Thisara to cut that hard, completely cramped for room as he could only chop back onto the stumps.|
|13.2||YS Chahal to NLTC Perera, BOUNDARY, 6 runs, if it's in the arc, he'll hit it out of the park. Okay, sorry. Right in the swinging arc, Thisara muscles this way over long-on. Dragged it just a little but it didn't matter. Massive hit.|
|13.1||YS Chahal to NLTC Perera, 2 runs, Jadhav dives over the ball at point to concede the extra run. Comical dive too. This wasn't cut all that hard..|
|12.6||AR Patel to NLTC Perera, 1 run, toe-ends an across-the-line slog to long-on.|
|12.5||AR Patel to SMA Priyanjan, 1 run, chipped over the infield to wide long-off, good work by Jadhav.|
|12.4||AR Patel to SMA Priyanjan, No run, lunges forward to drive, gets a thick inside edge back to Axar.|
|12.3||AR Patel to NLTC Perera, 1 run, slaps this full and flat delivery on off stump to long-off.|
|12.2||AR Patel to SMA Priyanjan, 1 run, chops this cut to short third man, as they scamper a single.|
|12.1||AR Patel to SMA Priyanjan, No run, right onto the back foot as he blocks.|
|11.6||Kuldeep Yadav to NLTC Perera, No run, this short ball takes ages to spin away. Thisara was through with the pull even before the ball arrived. It kept low as well, through to Dhoni.|
|11.5||Kuldeep Yadav to SMA Priyanjan, 1 run, goes onto the backfoot, makes room and cuts to deep cover.|
|11.4||Kuldeep Yadav to SMA Priyanjan, No run, forced off the front foot to Kohli at cover.|
|11.3||Kuldeep Yadav to NLTC Perera, 1 run, sees this ball in the slogging zone and belts this to long-on, flat hit.|
|11.2||Kuldeep Yadav to EMDY Munaweera, OUT, No run, he's lost his bat and is bowled as well. This was a shortish delivery on middle from Kuldeep, stopped on him just a little. He went to pull, tried to really hit this hard. Sweaty gloves, perhaps. The bat slipped out of his hand, needing square leg to be completely aware of what was happening. The off stump took a gentle knock.|
|11.1||Kuldeep Yadav to SMA Priyanjan, 1 run, looks to slog, manages to only squeeze this back past the bowler, to long-off.|
If you are in India, Pakistan or Bangladesh, watch streaming of this game
|10.6||AR Patel to SMA Priyanjan, 1 run, skids one back into middle, bunted towards midwicket.|
|10.5||AR Patel to EMDY Munaweera, 1 run, lands just short of deep square leg. Pulled this with the angle. Wonder if Kuldeep misjudged it and was late to come in from the ropes.|
|10.4||AR Patel to EMDY Munaweera, 2 runs, Pandey hares across from deep cover to deep point, stops that rasping cut shot. This was too short.|
|10.3||AR Patel to SMA Priyanjan, LEG BYES, 1 run, walks across the stumps to paddle, Axar follows him and tosses it up outside off, he still goes through with the shot, only to get a thick outside edge to short third man.|
|10.2||AR Patel to SMA Priyanjan, 2 runs, rocks back to cut, gets a thick outside edge past short third man. Kuldeep does well.|
|10.1||AR Patel to EMDY Munaweera, 1 run, short and coming in to middle and leg, whipped to deep backward square leg. Maiden T20I fifty .|
|9.6||Kuldeep Yadav to SMA Priyanjan, No run, fired full on the stumps, squeezed back to the bowler.|
|9.5||Kuldeep Yadav to SMA Priyanjan, BOUNDARY, 6 runs, the big shot was coming, this time he's pulled him for six. Too short, he picked the length up early and put this away over deep midwicket.|
|9.4||Kuldeep Yadav to SMA Priyanjan, No run, chops this attempted cut to short third man.|
|9.3||Kuldeep Yadav to SMA Priyanjan, No run, beaten by the wrong'un. Flatter, he had no clue.|
|9.2||Kuldeep Yadav to SMA Priyanjan, No run, gets forward and works this with the spin to short midwicket.|
|9.1||Kuldeep Yadav to SMA Priyanjan, No run, oh he's got him. Or has he? If the third umpire gave Mathews out, just for the sake of consistency, he should be giving this. Jeez, I wouldn't want to be Raveendra Wimalasiri though. Game of millimetres. Given not out this time. He was drawn forward, the googly spun past the outside edge. The backfoot was dragged out, just somehow managed to bring it back to life as he tried to get back. Just in by absolute inches..|
Another MS stumping, they've gone up again. Any doubts about the decision?
|8.6||YS Chahal to EMDY Munaweera, BOUNDARY, 4 runs, this is simply beautiful. Now he shows there's more to his game than just blind slogging. Chahal fires this short and just a touch wide, Munaweera stays inside the crease and opens the bat face late to steer this away past short third man..|
|8.5||YS Chahal to EMDY Munaweera, BOUNDARY, 6 runs, he's connected this beautifully. Sashays down the pitch without a trace of worry, gets underneath the flight and swings through like a golfer to deposit this into the sightscreen. What power, what timing.|
|8.4||YS Chahal to EMDY Munaweera, No run, touch short and just outside off, punched to mid-off.|
|8.3||YS Chahal to EMDY Munaweera, No run, shortens his length, the googly this time, worked with the spin to short fine leg. Earns appreciation from MS behind the stumps.|
|8.3||YS Chahal to EMDY Munaweera, WIDE, 1 run, fires this way outside off. Perhaps expected the batsman to give him the charge.|
|8.2||YS Chahal to EMDY Munaweera, No run, looked to slog, but ended up just delicately bunting this with the spin to point.|
|8.1||YS Chahal to EMDY Munaweera, BOUNDARY, 6 runs, this is a sensational stroke, inside-out over deep extra cover. Skipped down the pitch, didn't get to the pitch of the ball but went through with the stroke, with the spin. Ah, so good to watch. Great connection. Sailed away.|
Amila Sankha is looking at trends here: "Bumrah got hammered in first over, wicket in next over... Chala got hammered in in first over, wicket in next over... Axar got hammered in in first over, next over?"
|7.6||Kuldeep Yadav to EMDY Munaweera, 1 run, punched back down the ground, past Kuldeep.|
|7.5||Kuldeep Yadav to EMDY Munaweera, No run, cracker of a googly. Landed this outside off and got this to go away further. Beaten.|
Kuber: "Why is siriwardana not playing?" Complained of stiffness in his back. Priyajan is making his debut as a result
|7.4||Kuldeep Yadav to SMA Priyanjan, 1 run, another googly, this time he's caressed this wide of cover as they take an easy single.|
|7.3||Kuldeep Yadav to SMA Priyanjan, No run, steps out to work this wide of midwicket but can't get any bat on it. Got into a tangle, hit on the pad..|
|7.2||Kuldeep Yadav to SMA Priyanjan, No run, wrong'un which he lunges forward to defend. Read this off the pitch.|
|7.1||Kuldeep Yadav to SMA Priyanjan, No run, spins back into middle and leg, defended off the back foot to short midwicket.|
Here's Kuldeep Yadav
|6.6||YS Chahal to EMDY Munaweera, 2 runs, touch short, he cuts this away towards deep point off the front foot.|
|6.5||YS Chahal to SMA Priyanjan, 1 run, driven into the gap at cover for an easy single.|
|6.4||YS Chahal to SMA Priyanjan, No run, lovely in-drifter from wide of the crease, Priyanjan lunges forward and deadbats that.|
|6.3||YS Chahal to AD Mathews, OUT, No run, he's almost always right when he appeals. He's done this so many times that these stumpings appear very normal for him. Fact is it was tremendous piece of glove work. Credit to Chahal as well, who drew him forward with the flight and then got this to spin past the outside edge on the drive. The back foot dragged outside the crease and may have been on the line when the bails came off. Correct decision in the end..|
|6.2||YS Chahal to EMDY Munaweera, 1 run, steps out and drives with the spin to long-off. If Chahal was slightly taller, he would've been able to stop that.|
|6.1||YS Chahal to AD Mathews, 1 run, drifts this into the pads, worked to deep midwicket.|
MS Dhoni with a confident appeal for a stumping. They've gone upstairs
|5.6||AR Patel to EMDY Munaweera, No run, fired full outside off, he backs away and gives it a good whack. KL Rahul throws himself to his left at cover and pulls off a one-handed stop. Stunning..|
|5.5||AR Patel to EMDY Munaweera, BOUNDARY, 4 runs, this is superb from Munaweera. Looked out of sorts in the ODIs, but the shortest format has galvanised him. Steps out, gets to the pitch of the ball and lofts this with the spin over mid-off.|
|5.4||AR Patel to EMDY Munaweera, No run, backs away to blast that away over cover, Axar shortened his length and nearly had a wicket. Thick inside edge to short fine leg. .|
|5.3||AR Patel to EMDY Munaweera, BOUNDARY, 4 runs, whips this from length, no chance for Jadhav at deep midwicket. This was angled into the pads, he used the depth of the crease to find the spot..|
|5.2||AR Patel to AD Mathews, 1 run, much fuller, on middle and leg, turned to the vacant midwicket region.|
|5.1||AR Patel to AD Mathews, BOUNDARY, 4 runs, dart first ball and that's been put away. Mathews gets across the stumps and tickles this to the fine leg boundary.|
Axar from around the stumps.
|4.6||JJ Bumrah to EMDY Munaweera, No run, excellent bouncer, angled into middle and leg from wide of the crease, this one zips past his ears.|
|4.5||JJ Bumrah to EMDY Munaweera, No run, attempted yorker, turns out to be a low full toss, driven straight to extra cover.|
|4.4||JJ Bumrah to AD Mathews, 1 run, gets onto his toes and steers this down to third man.|
|4.3||JJ Bumrah to N Dickwella, OUT, No run, gives him a send-off with claps. Dickwella has paid the price for being too cheeky. Looked to guide this away-going delivery past short third man, but the initial movement was to paddle that away. Bumrah saw the late adjustment before he delivered, and yet angled it across from wide of the crease. Dickwella missed it altogether as the off stump took a walk..|
|4.2||JJ Bumrah to N Dickwella, No run, full and straight on leg stump, flicked to midwicket.|
|4.1||JJ Bumrah to N Dickwella, No run, makes room, Bumrah follows him and digs in a length ball outside leg. Pushed to Kohli at cover.|
Change of ends for Bumrah.
Rohan Bhatt: "Now this kind of counter attack was missing for the Entire tour. This will definitely puts pressure on Kohli and team and that pressure was not seen (except that freak bowling spell from young mystery spinner for one of ODI)..."
|3.6||YS Chahal to EMDY Munaweera, No run, another skiddy delivery that comes back in to cramp him for room as he looks to work this to the leg side. Hit on the pad..|
|3.5||YS Chahal to EMDY Munaweera, No run, another quicker delivery that slides back in to hit him high on the pad as he looks to work this to the leg side.|
|3.4||YS Chahal to N Dickwella, 1 run, full on middle and leg, worked to deep midwicket.|
|3.3||YS Chahal to EMDY Munaweera, LEG BYES, 1 run, this is an in-drifter that skids on, deflects off the pad to short third man. Would've missed leg..|
|3.2||YS Chahal to EMDY Munaweera, BOUNDARY, 6 runs, too much flight again and he's belted this straight over his head. This lands closer to the sightscreen. Straight as a dye. Long-off moved to deep extra cover. So he moves further outside leg and blasts this away.|
|3.1||YS Chahal to EMDY Munaweera, BOUNDARY, 6 runs, What a welcome. Tossed up gently on off, Munaweera makes room and lofts this inside-out over extra cover. That flew off his blade.|
santosh battula: "SL are playing like they have 20 wickets and 10 overs left." Finally. This is what we've been waiting for, all tour, no?
|2.6||B Kumar to EMDY Munaweera, 1 run, gets on top of the bounce and works this incoming short of length delivery to Bumrah at short fine for a quick single.|
|2.5||B Kumar to EMDY Munaweera, BOUNDARY, 4 runs, he's hoicked this from outside off to the square leg fence. This was a knuckleball from Bhuvi, too short. Enough time to pick that away.|
|2.4||B Kumar to EMDY Munaweera, No run, shoots a bouncer on middle and leg, Munaweera ducks under that one.|
|2.3||B Kumar to EMDY Munaweera, BOUNDARY, 4 runs, simple extension of his arms as he belts this through the line into the cover boundary. Nothing wrong with the delivery, this time. Length, just outside off, and he put that away so easily. Should give him immense confidence.|
|2.2||B Kumar to WU Tharanga, OUT, No run, much better. Super comeback. The old Bhuvi swing that has been missing all series raises its head, finally, on the last day of tour. He gets this to bend back in from middle, Tharanga plays outside the line of the delivery as the ball snakes back in and deflects off the pad and clatters into the stumps.|
|2.1||B Kumar to WU Tharanga, BOUNDARY, 4 runs, why would you bowl a short delivery at 130kph? Or try to, rather? Someday I'll find out. Tharanga helps this over midwicket. Swiveled back and pulled that away without much fuss..|
|1.6||JJ Bumrah to N Dickwella, 2 runs, this time he nearly chops on. The thick inside edge runs down towards deep fine leg. Axar was haring in from the ropes, but Dickwella is very quick to turn back for the second.|
|1.5||JJ Bumrah to N Dickwella, BOUNDARY, 4 runs, And again! He's brave, has no trace of worry. Down on one knee as he gets outside off and lap sweeps this length ball over short fine leg again.|
|1.4||JJ Bumrah to N Dickwella, BOUNDARY, 4 runs, ah, beautiful. This is the shot of the Dilshan kind. Walks across, uses the pace of the bowler and paddles this wide of MS Dhoni. Beats short fine leg quite comfortably.|
|1.3||JJ Bumrah to N Dickwella, BOUNDARY, 4 runs, this is the kind of whip that made Jayasuriya quite a rage in the 1990s. Length on middle and he simply whips this nonchalantly to the square leg boundary. Change of pace again, he picked it well.|
|1.2||JJ Bumrah to N Dickwella, No run, slower length ball on middle, defended to the off side.|
|1.1||JJ Bumrah to WU Tharanga, 1 run, banged in short, gets this to rise from mid-pitch, Tharanga works this off his hip to fine leg.|
Jasprit Bumrah from the other end.
|0.6||B Kumar to N Dickwella, No run, floats this length ball across the left-hander who bunts it gently to the off side. Tight first over from Bhuvneshwar.|
|0.5||B Kumar to N Dickwella, No run, defends this incoming delivery from the crease to short cover. Should've looked to push forward.|
|0.4||B Kumar to N Dickwella, 2 runs, length ball sliding down leg, Dickwella lends direction to Bhuvi's pace, runs down to fine leg.|
|0.3||B Kumar to N Dickwella, No run, clever change of pace. Bowls a knuckleball as he sees Dickwella charge down the pitch to slap this over cover, missed it completely. He shortened his length just a touch as well.|
|0.2||B Kumar to WU Tharanga, LEG BYES, 1 run, plays outside the line of that length ball that holds its line on middle, hit high on the pad. They take a run off the deflection again.|
|0.1||B Kumar to N Dickwella, LEG BYES, 1 run, back of length delivery that shapes into middle and leg, Dickwella looks to work it behind square. Deflects off the thigh pad and it's a leg bye to start.|
7.39pm Bhuvneshwar will bowl the first over. Tharanga and Dickwella are the openers for Sri Lanka. India are chasing 9-0 on tour. A wide slip is in place.
7.25pm Heads says Kohli. Heads it is. India will bowl first. It's drizzling as he speaks of the need to "create good habits." Shardul Thakur, Ajinkya Rahane are out from the side that played the fifth ODI. Axar Patel and KL Rahul are in. Hardik Pandya continues to sit out. Presume he's been rested to manage a niggle.
Sri Lanka have made a host of changes. Sekkuge, Thisara, Shanaka and Udana are in.
Will be interesting to see if Kohli opens. He's done so quite successfully for RCB. The dynamics of this T20 side is pretty similar to the one-day side. In stark contrast to how things were in 2007, when India were an instant hit. Hardik Pandya doesn't seem fully fit. He's been walking around gingerly. Wonder if we can read too much into it. I he's out, it's possible Axar will play. Of course I'm assuming they'll play Kuldeep and Chahal. Let's see.
Huzefa: "With all these rotations and restings, the only player who hasn't got any rest is the captain himself. It's high time Kohli rests himself from a few innocuous games like this one. India needs this guy fit and running than anyone else in the squad."
7.00pm Pitch report now, even as the umpires come out to inspect. There's a bit of sweating underneath the surface because the covers have been on for a better part of the last 24 hours. It's hard, but the issue teams could have to contend with is the dew. Effect of spin minimal, then? Only time will tell. Toss at 7.25pm, match from 7.40pm. 90 percent of the grounf seems fine, according to the umpires. We'll have a full game
6.45 pm It's 15 minutes to the umpires' inspection and there are no covers on the ground. Some players, Kohli, Rahul, Chahal, Pandey all among them, have even occupied a patch at one side of the ground and begun warming up
6.30 pm We should have had the toss right now, but instead we have super soppers and they are running haywire. The groundstaff are everywhere, making sure the outfield is good enough to play on. Certainly good signs that we will have a game tonight. India will be looking to add a ninth win in nine matches to their kitty. Sri Lanka will want to prove that the fight within them hasn't been extinguished. Remember, inspection at 7pm
Niharika Singh: "I reckon it's Virat Kohli's last chance to open the batting with the kind of form Rohit and Shikhar are in. He hasn't really fired there, number 3 seems like a better spot. "
Dhaval: "I feel if there are specialist openers in the squad (in this case Rahul and in future may be Pant) Kohli shouldn't open. He's at his best when he comes at No. 3 even in T20s. "
Harini Venkatar: "But 4 centuries in IPL 2016 has definitely boosted Kohli's desire to be in the list of Indians with century in all three formats. It's the only elusive thing."
"Feels like some of our pleyers wants to look like Arjuna in 1996, some wants to have fitnes levels as Mahanama (if one can remember what happened to him after he scores a fifty every time), some wants to follow Gurusinghe's strike rates. May be they are trying to recreate 1996 win in next world cup." Ouch. Hopefully the team's nowhere near Udana and his biting wit.
6.15 pm There is an inspection at 7.00 pm. So a delayed start, certainly, but we might still get away with a full 20 over game with the way things are shaping up
Syed Ali Safdar: "Sri Lanka are a much better side for the T20 but after the two major series they lost and that too at home will definitely not bring them in much confidence into this game. "
6.00 pm We're hearing reports that the covers are coming off at the Premadasa. There is no more rain, and the square is visible. The pitch is visible. Good signs
Prudhvi: "Not to take away from this match and its importance but any reason as to why India vs Australia odi series cant be seen in this site or even BCCI official app I just want to see if there is an ODI in my city. I can see the upcoming england series and its dates though." The official announcement has come in and the schedule is exactly as it is here in this piece from Arun Venugopal
usara sirimanne: "Whats the ground situation. Got the tickets in my hands. Wondering whether the trip be worth" So, you got what you came for?
Hasitha: "We are heading to the ground now... No matter the outcome. We are going to enjoy the moment..." There we go, not all of the Sri Lanka fans have given up.
Dhaval: "Come T20 and I can't stop thinking about Rishabh Pant who I think should have been included as a cover up for Dhawan and should have even quietly made it to the XI. :)" He certainly seems to be getting a boat load of sympathy. Pity we aren't selectors, isn't it?
Jigar Shah: "One of the reason why Pant or other keeper are not getting many chances as yet is the way Dhoni performing, Selectors must have taken a call to retain him till 2019. And with Ravi Shashtri's backing I dont think unless an Injury MS is going to be replaced before 2019."
"I can sense SL doing the rain dance and India doing the rain dance in reverse." Question is, what are you doing Guy. Right now, this exact instant. We kinda wanna know. If it's nothing, why don't you dig into the preview for this all important (not really) cricket match squeezed into 20 little overs.
"It's usually the cricket nuts like me who tune in 1 hour before a match. And users like me have already read the preview (like twice). No need to push it. Just reiterates lack of other content around the game" Oh come on, Cyrus. Are you really starved for quality cricket content? Really? We have a whole website full of them. And a magazine too.
Guy is just a guy who loves us so much that he doesn't wanna leave us: "All joking aside, I agree that this is a really important contest for Sri Lanka. Would you say this might be their last chance to regain the support of the nation? Judging by how the crowd reacted in the 3rd ODI (or 4th I can't quite remember), I feel that this might be the last straw if they lose here." ---- Well, generally, the fans there are a brilliant lot. They like their music. They like their satire. And they certainly like their team. I suppose it must hurt for them to see Sri Lanka not even putting up a fight through the course of an entire tour. Hopefully they can stick out the tough times because the team does have some talented players. Kusal Mendis sweeping India to oblivion in the second Test. Akila Dananjaya turning India's batsmen clueless in a chase of 220-odd. There's some raw material there. Oh, and Dhammika Prasad might be coming back. That wily old seamer who bowls James-Anderson-like deliveries on the flattest of pitches.
Adam: "With all the positives (not so many), you have to say, sadly but honestly, SLC is falling and that to rapidly. "
arun: "Do we have a reserve day in case of a washout?" ---- I'm sure they've made the necessary precautions to ensure we can play keep away from work not just today, but tomorrow as well.
5.30 pm So someone's left the water running at the Premadasa. The entire ground has been covered with an hour and a half for the first ball. The good news, though, is the groundstaff, those wizards who ensure every blade of grass on a Sri Lankan ground is protected from precipitation, are out there hard at work. I'm Alagappan Muthu and I ask you to keep your fingers crossed with me that we will see some cricket.
"What?? left the tap open? I should tell it to my mother, not only me in this world forgets to close the tap." It's an epidemic, Shreyanshu. It's a crippling, earth-shattering, eye-roll inducing epidemic. But if our top-notch diviner of dark and spooky clouds, a one Mr Andrew Fidel Fernando, is to be believed, the rain this evening shouldn't give us too much trouble.
